Is it okay to use pedals as main distortion?

Re: Is it okay to use pedals as main distortion?

(I don't know why Metal would be played throught a Bassman.)

Sir, I give you a counter-example, Greg Koch's Death of a Bassman. The first known example of an odd-meter metal guitar riff employing both a tweed Bassman and banjo rolls. :jester:

G&Legacy: IMO, a Bassman is a great platform for almost any type of rock. It splits the difference between clean and dirty, and adds "real tube amp" mojo to stomp box distortion. I'd much rather play a rig like that a modern metal monster channel-switcher, or worse yet, a modeler.

My own rig is an 18 Watter clone for clean-to-crunch, and a Keeley DS-1 for dirt levels beyond that. For lower-volume playing at church, I'm looking at a silverface Champ for the clean-to-crunch part.

Keep the Bassman, try some new pedals. It's fun.

If it works and you like the sound then stick with it.

first...i suggest getting the BEST sound you can from your amp...clear and just right to your ears, just breaking up, then use that little pedal of yours and give it a nice KICK IN THE %&*^*!!!!!! I usually use my clean channel until it just starts to break a little and use the pedal to distort the signal...many people hate pedals and say they give mosquito-like distortion but just tinker with them a while and you'll get some nice tones out of it...
....AND REMEMBER!!! AMP WITH FULL GAIN + PEDAL WITH FULL GAIN = CRAP!!
and believe it or not obviously that MT-2 is gonna sound like crap if it's pushing that random guitar pack 10-watter...my DS-2 sounds awesome through my amp and I've seen that pedal get bashed around a LOT, even in this forum...ohh...and congrats on that Bassman dude!!!!

I've owned 2 Blackface Bassmans (64 & 65 IIRC) and what I got out of the amps were 3 stages. Clean. Clean and Loud. Saturated.

Never liked either of those two amps.

Ah, but he's talking about a Tweed Bassman. Black- or silver-face would be cleaner, but still great basic amps and pedal-friendly.

If you like it, go for it.

I don't understand why people say this?

If your AUDIENCE likes it, go for it. I always ask people for critique on my tone and make adjustments until I'm settled between what the majority of people like and what I like.

Re: Is it okay to use pedals as main distortion?

i like a pedal into a non-master vol tube amp better than a master volume tube amp with the preamp set high. for some reason, to me, pedal distortion sounds a lot better (and is more dynamic) than distorted preamp tubes.

Re: Is it okay to use pedals as main distortion?

Well.....like alot of other players have done, and do!!
As long as the amp sounds good, then most pedals will sound good as well....and never mind the idealist comments^ ;)

Hey there Rid . . .

. . . how's that new hi-gain amp comming along !???

Have i missed any up-dates ?

Re: Is it okay to use pedals as main distortion?

My one cousin has a Peavey ValveKinf 2x12 (100W) and use a MetalMuff in front of it, and his brother, (also my cousin :nana: ) has a Peavey 5150 2x12 Combo and has TWO TS-9's infront of his amp !

ME . . . i will ALWAYS use pedals, as NO AMP can do the fuzz type tone that i want !!!

Regardless of my amps, you will always see atleast one Fuzz and one Booster infront of my amps !
No otherway to get my tone !

What ever works for you mate !!!

Just try and always keep it all-valve (amp wise !!!)

My 2cents
