Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

I have one Epi LP, and i will be getting (i hope) another Epi LP (3 'bucker BBeauty) for a steal . . .

. . . but i have no GIBBO !

So i saw this on the MF site :

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...ded-Double-Cutaway-Electric-Guitar?sku=517512

As you can see, it is the DC w. twin P90's for $770.00

I like the bare-bones look, I LOVE the P90 tone (ala, Leslie West), and it might be a good way into the Gibbo-Family (?)

Oh, and the price range is OK.

But what does the other Gibson owners think of this guitar ?
Better deals to be had elsewhere ?

I know i will not get a '73 GOLD TOP GIBSON LP for $770.00

Any info very welcome !

Paul Reed Smith makes a double cut SE model with p90's, and a maple top with flame maple veneer that looks beautiful. I have been really impressed with that whole line, especially for 500 dollars. I'd take it over a low end gibson any day. I like Gibsons, but there is no such thing as a "good deal" from Gibson. You pay for them.

Re: Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

For the money I like 'em, I wouldn't be afraid of them if I were looking to buy one. But, I prefer 'em shiny not faded!

Re: Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

Ditto Mr B - I've known two accomplished players who also did set ups at guitar stores. Both of them bought a PRS SE - these are guys who have played pretty much everything in the store.

Re: Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

the prs SE series is IMO the best steal on the market right now. you can get them in a sweet sunburst w/ a maple veneer or just plain. much better quality IMO than the faded DC. i've played that one as well.

Re: Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

i love that Gibson double cut model with the P90's.... but i also have GAS for guitars like that and a LP JR these days!!!

Re: Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

I've always loved those LP dbl cuts, especially in TV Yellow. I've played several of them, and they sound fantastic. I'm a cheap bastard though and would buy one off of ebay, most likely. Oh, and I'd get one w/ a hardshell case...I don't trust guitars being shipped in gig bags.

Re: Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

I'd save more $ and buy the Historic Double cut. The faded leave a lot to be desired!

If you're one of those people who are anal about finish being perfect from the factory you won't like it. It has to age before it hardens up and gets tougher/shiney.

That said, they're one of, if not, the most toneful guitars in that pricerange. Don't worry about the neck's finish being rough, you have to play it until it's smooth.

Here's mine(I threw a TV jones power tron in it.):

And for $700, I don't see where people are getting the idea that their quality leaves anything to be desired...

Re: Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

I have one of those on my list too. I played one a few weeks ago, and bashed the neck pretty hard on a thread here. However, plenty of people said play them, and the neck will slick right up. Well, I thought I could polish it up and acheive the same thing. I may do that one of these days.

looks cool. that powertron must absolutely rock. i'm thinking about one for my barclay in a humbucker case

Re: Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

The one I tried felt sticky, like someone had coated it in strawberry jam. I actually asked one of the sales guys if it was dirty, and he said "no, that's how it's supposed to feel". Back on the rack it went. Apparently I'm not the only one who has this complaint.

I don't think it's too much to ask for a guitar at that price to have a proper finish. It doesn't have to be glossy, but couldn't they at least sand it smooth a bit? Fender doesn't seem to have a problem smoothing out the nitro finish on their comparably priced Highway One series.

Also, REAL "faded" finishes do not look or feel like that. I think this is just Gibson being lazy as opposed to them trying to achieve some sort of relic look.

I did play it a bit, and it sounded pretty good, but I think I prefer P90's in an LP myself - they are a bit more tonally balanced. Regardless, the finish was such a turn-off I don't think I'll ever pick one up.

Read my post. After they age the finish gets glossy and hard.

Read my post. After they age the finish gets glossy and hard.

So why doesn't Gibson let them age in the factory, as opposed to sending them out to stores virtually unplayable? This is the part I don't get. Every other Gibson I pick up feels fine.

Very, VERY nice indeed !

I still like both colours though !

How does the stock pu's sound ?
I am after a raw, gritty tone, and NOT a nice smooth and mellow one !
I also love the idea of a Nitro finnish, but the sticky neck does sound some alarm bells ! :11:

Still, i would love to hear this guitar through both a maxed craked Marshall 18watter Bluesbreaker and a Fender Bassman LTD.

Oh, and how does youe new pu differ from the stock P90 ?

Thanx . . .

. . . and keep 'em comming guys !!!

Re: Is it only me who thinks this is a good buy ? (GIBSON DC content)

Interesting...The neck on my SG was smooth as glass when i got it. And I don't think the finish is "rough" feeling. It's 'rough' compared to a gloss finish but the finish feels fine to me.

as you can see, it's got 12 pole pieces. it's essentially a filtertron in a p90 mount. it's the powertron mount. i wish i would've gotten a DC or a soapbar maple. too late now

The dude said the guitar was STICKY. Laquer does cure over time, but it should not be STICKY on the sale rack. If the finish is that soft, the guitar stand and whatever else it is leaning against is making huge impressions/craters in the finish. I like satin finish guitars, but satin does not mean GOOEY. Sounds like they left off the sealer coats to me. And if it ain't shiney from the factory, the only parts that will ever "get" shiney will be the part your arm rubs against constantly. Laquer is not self polishing. I'd steer clear of that one, it can't be par for the course.

not sticky as in tacky but sticky as in a bit rough and not smooth. no guitar should have a finish that's still some-what wet

I don't remember what the stock P-90 sounded like to be honest. I swaped it for the tron because I was just ****ing sick and tired of single coil hum.

It was a great sounding pickup if I remember right. The tron has a little more upper mids and is a bit brighter but it still has all the balls the P-90 did. The tron is a little smoother than the P-90 was, but it depends how much gain you feed it. Under low/medium gain it will be gritty and raw either way.

And yep, the back of the neck is sticky when new... Most the paint has wore down on mine though.
