I wouldn't attempt it.I ruined a Fender Fat 50 a few years ago doing that.I'd call and ask Scott Miller or one of the Duncan techs before trying it.

It can break the winds. But it can also work without issues. It´s more likely to work with wax potted SCs than with Enamel coated ones (read "Vintage replica"). An SSL-1 would fall into the latter category IIRC.
Definitely a better idea to talk to Scott or MJ first, or to trade it for an SSL-2

From my understand, and what I've been told by a forum winder, you cannot do that on SSL-1's, or should not. The wires are actually touching the magnets directly and moving them up and down risks breaking them at that point. The only way to fix it would be a complete rewind since the break would be so deep in the windings.
Now, I have a set of 90's American Standard Fender stock Strat pickups. Their bobbins are plastic with a little sleeve that the magnets go through, much like a humbucker slug coil. Since that sleeve is between the magnet and wire, I can adjust the poles without risking a break. However, repeated movement of the magnet rods could make it so they don't stay in place so it becomes a set and forget thing.

I move ones in the plastic bobbins all the time. You can pull them and reverse polarity too. But yes, don't push anything with a fiber bobbin and no protection between the coil wire and poles. Even if you knew there was a tape layer, or a plastic sleeve like Tom Andersons have, it's not worth it. I believe in my past somewhere I did adjust poles on a vintage wind (wax potted) and it was okay, but I didn't touch the outside poles. If you move the outside E poles you all but guarantee a break.

Right again. Never attempt this unless you KNOW that the bobbins are the one-piece plastic type Erik describes immediately above.
But if they are such bobbins, you could move the rods around all you want. If they ever get too loose to stay in place, you could pull the rods out, put a little bit of crazy glue inside the holes, let it dry and put the rods back in.

I'd say you have at least a 75% chance, and maybe a 90% chance of breaking magnet wire. Don't do it. UNLESS someone is holding a gun to your head.

Well, since I´m a pacifist at heart and can´t bring myself to destroy a good pickup, I´ll keep a Dimarzio single coil around to facilitate the latter :laugh2:

The thing you have to remember here is that Evan is an officer of the company. He opens himself and the company up to liability if he tells you NOT to do it at gunpoint. Zhang doesn't really care if you get shot. He'd rather save the pickup. Evan probably would too, he just can't say it in a public forum. I think the consensus is don't do it even if at gunpoint. :laugh2: If anything it would make for a pretty original obituary. Perhaps the headstone would read: "Here lies Zerberus, died defending the integrity of his Duncan single coil." or better yet "Here lies Zerberus, he mutilated that Dimarzio, and the guy shot him anyway for being an...what the heck was someone holding him at gunpoint for anyway?":laugh2:

I broke the winding on several SSL-1 pups that I "adjusted" the polls on.
I had done it on some old Fender pups without trouble. But I don't touch them now.
