Is it safe to Run bass through my '80 Fender Bassman 70?

I know, stupid question right? haha

But I Just gotta make sure it won't do any damage, being as the Bassman is my main gigging amp...My bass players amp died though, so I was considered hooking the bassman head up to the speakers in her cab (15" 4 ohm 200watt, so the load and wattage is safe), to get us through till we can get her amp fixed, or replaced...So yeah, this is safe right? I'm not gonna screw up the bassman, by using it for its intended purpose, right?

I have played bass live with my Fender guitar amp, and it's fine.

Lol

No

I used my 68' for Bass, and it sounded fantastic. Just make sure to get the impedances right and you're good to go.

I felt like a moron for even asking...but still, ya know, Just like grandma always says "better safe than sorry"...so groovy, Impedance's match, speaker can definitely handle the wattage, etc...so we're good. Thanks for answering my retarded question I shouldn't have even had to ask...haha.

You'd probably be shocked by how often I get asked that question.

It's completely safe.

My dad plays bass through a Super Reverb without issue.

I wonder why the amp is called a Bassman...

Re: Is it safe to Run bass through my '80 Fender Bassman 70?

its mainly your speakers that get hammered by bass frequencies...are they up to the task?

Yeah the speakers are the same speakers that were in her Bass Cab to begin with...haha...Like I said, it was a stupid question, but figured it's best to ask other, than to second guess myself as my amp explodes. haha

I'd put the head anywhere but on top of the cabinet to save the low frequencies from shaking the bejabbers out of the hot tubes. But That's just me, i usually do that with my guitar heads too.

Same speakers don't mean same thing. A open back cabinet can change vulnerability of the speakers quite a bit.

Re: Is it safe to Run bass through my '80 Fender Bassman 70?

Just remember the headroom on those amps are not gonna be what you'd normally get from a much higher wattage solid state or even tube bass amp. It's going to overdrive much sooner and if that's not the sound you're going for, you'll have to get the rest of the guys you're playing with to come down on volume.

Now if you are going for a bass sound with a bit of an edge, plug it in, turn it up and rock out brother. :headbang:

Re: Is it safe to Run bass through my '80 Fender Bassman 70?

If you put one of those into a real bass cab with a high effeciency/wattage rating, they will get the job done as well as any 200 watt SS bass amp out there. Sure it'll overdrive some, but loads of models of SS bass amps in the upper range have tube preamps for just that sound.

I used my '68 Bassman into either a Carvin 15" cab, or a no name 18" in a ported cab, and it would just pound the Earth. Plenty of volume for any genre not dependant on super loud clean guitars, or tons of volume overall.

Hint: Keep the Master Volume on 10 for minimum distortion.

Should be fine.

^^ Good point. Master on 10, channel volume to the room.
