is it the pickups or the mahagony?

I just finished putting together my SSH superstrat greenie, made mostly from Warmoth parts. It came out great, although I was hoping more for Dweezil green, and the color came out more like Vai’s greenie, with white pickguard and knobs, chrome recessed original Floyd Rose; the flutter is fantastic. But here’s my problem – I’ve got an Air Norton (S) in the neck, Virtual Vintage Solo in the middle, and Air Zone in the bridge – and I don’t like the sound. I’ve mentioned in the past that my favorite guitar for soloing is my Ibanez S540 with QM pickups; I love the Wizard neck, of course, and even with the stock pickups, I get great clarity and smooth sustain on legato runs using both the neck and bridge pickups. When I was planning my greenie, I was hoping for more of the same, along with a more versatile middle. Well, the sound is a disappointment; it’s a much less focused sound from both bridge and neck pickups, and doesn’t come close to the sustain, articulation, or even output of my Saber.

So am I simply being unrealistic in wanting my light swamp ash-bodied guitar with a gigantic recessed Floyd to sound similar to a mahogany-bodied Lo-Pro trem-equipped Ibanez? Or is there another pickup configuration you could suggest that might get me closer? I’m thinking of maybe trying a Duncan ‘lil 59 in the neck and perhaps a Fred or Mo’ Joe in the bridge? Any thoughts?

A PATB-3 should keep things fat and clear. As far as a neck pickup, I'd go with a Cool Rails.

If you are looking for focus and sustain I would suggest a Cool Rails in the neck as well. As far as a good focused humbucker for an ash guitar I would think the Custom Custom or if you need more crunch a Custom.

I hope you find what you need but I have to say I have played some Ibanez Saber/S type guitars that were hard to beat.

I'd say it's neither the pickups or the wood. It's the Floyd!

I just built two hard tail guitars. One was from light weight ash and the other from mahogony. They both sound good, but the ash one seems to have more 3D depth actually. Of course ash will always be brighter and snappier overall, with less mids. Mahogony will usually be smoother with thicker mids.

I have a feeling it might be the Floyd, too. I mean, the cavity for the recessed trem is gigantic, no exaggeration. I'd always heard stories about how a recessed Floyd greatly reduces sustain, but I had no idea it would make so much difference. If I can't come close to the tones of my Saber, maybe I should shoot for more of a pure strat sound? I don't actually even own a "real" strat, and although I'm not a huge fan of "traditional" strat sounds, people like Eric Johnson, YJM and others have achieved some interesting variations. Any thoughts in that direction?

Try a dimarzio breed or tonezone.

If you're looking for a more hairmetal style flavor, order a dimarzio double whammy.
