Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

I agree with ya, TGHIF...Eldon Shamblin played Charlie Christian stuff on a maple neck Strat, Otis Rush made one sustain like a 335. Just sayin' not everybody has the touch to make that work...the best of them make something new out of it that bends the 'rules'.

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

I find they're extremely versatile for any genre of music . I won't play anything else.

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

if i had to play only one single coil guitar forever, id pick a tele over a strat. i do own a strat but i wouldn't want to play everything on it.

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

I assume you mean a stock Strat? Also, by "everything", usually Hardcore Grind/ Thrash/Nu/Black etc. is the only thing in question with normal output single coils.
Sure, you can play Old Skool Heavy Metal , like Blackmore proved, with a stock Strat and a Marshall Plexi, even though perhaps Eddie proved that a humbucker in the bridge was a better tool for the job.
I think the thing that changes the equation these days are both noiseless low output single coils and modern high gain Amps.
Now, you gotta say that sure, you could do the heaviest stuff around with a stock Strat, although again, there may be better tools for the job, its becomes a matter of the Artists discretion now more than ever.

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

I own some pretty decent guitars. With that said, my bass player said yesterday during practice that he likes my playing on the strat the most. Funny, it's my least expensive guitar.

I don't like strats off the sale wall. They just don't work for me. With that said, I think the beauty of a strat, is when you couple it with a guitarist that understands his sound, and how to get the voicing on his instrument to get him the tones he wants. It's such a customizable guitar, that you can really make it your own, and there are so many variations of it.

I'll agree with the posted Wahwah statement though. Strats do not suffer fools lightly. I still don't feel I have mine tamed, even if my band seems to think so. But, I do love playing mine. There is a certain sturdiness to the fender design that make playing a strat reassuring. You know it's rock solid, and if not, you can fix it on the spot. You don't have to baby it, you just play it.

And yes, my strat gets me my nastiest tones (Ok, understand that for me nasty is hotrails, a plimsoul and a fender Bjr, lol), and my coolest blues tones, all in one guitar.

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

Yes, you can play everything with a Strat.

I have 3 electrics....all 3 S-S-S Strats!

With the right amp and pedals...anything is possible!

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

I find I play a little bit differently on a strat than I do on my LP or my SG...I feel more like me when I play the strat...It's comfy and I always feel more confident on it by comparison...But thats just me..

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

the coolest thing (apart from the two horns) about strats is the three rows of six pole pieces.....

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

I think that outside of certain elements in a given tone, no two guitars with the same gauge strings will sound WORLDS APART plugged into the same amp.

'Tone rhetoric' has defined various electric guitars as being completely different classes of instrument. Like comparing an SG to a Strat is the same thing as comparing a trumpet to a bassoon......so how do jazz players get convincing 175 tones using a telecaster neck pickup? why do people get great clean funk tones using almost ANY middle or bridge pickup on any guitar?

THEY'RE ALL GUITARS! THEY WILL ALL SOUND LIKE ELECTRIC GUITARS WITH VERY SUBTLE DIFFERENCES!

A good tone is NOT harsh to the point that it makes audience members flinch when you pick the strings, or muddy to the point that you cant tell what notes are being played. This grey area is not the size of the oceans, guitars will all sound similar to an extent.

It's very subtle things that the player enjoys differently (how the attack frequencies FEEL, neck specs, pickups) but bystanders will never notice unless a tone is dead obvious in how 'stratty' or 'insert famous guitar type' it is. Getting a specific sound is just an artist thing, we can imagine a tone that we want to the finest detail and experiment until we get tone boners....non guitar players will never understand this.

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

Youre gonna like that Antiquities Mini Humbucker Brahman.

I can't stop thinking about it.

I'm going to unload 30bpm dominant 7th arpeggios all over it as I'm in the middle of a technique overhaul brought to you in part by gingko biloba and tons of cuban coffee. That combo gets me very focused.

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

The answer will vary from player to player. There are things I can't play on a Strat because I don't practice enough; I use a Soloist or an Ibanez RG instead. Another guitarist might be able to play all of that stuff on a Strat. Sometimes I use those two extra frets, though. Also, I like to dig in with the neck 'bucker on a Les Paul; I don't find I can get those sounds from a Strat. You might, but we're not talking about you.

I don't agree at all with this statement..

I'd like to see on video navigate that in a nice Vercase ballgown!

I hope you mean my avatar. A lot of people seem to think she looks better in Versace than I do.

We've been over this already, and we're waiting for Version 2 with similar strings and pickups. Why? Have you seen many episodes of That '70s Show? Ever notice the height difference between Donna and Jackie? Well, if you put Donna in flats and Jackie in platforms, you can reduce the height difference and make them appear closer to the same height. But try putting them in the same kind of shoes. Somehow, it makes their difference in height more dramatic than in the first case. I'm not sure why; it must be magic or something.

Re: Is it true? Can you play everything with a Strat?

I love how people always say things like "Nothing in the world sounds like a Strat but a Strat"...

What a dumb ass statment...that could be said for any guitarin the world...try it for yourself and you'll see...

Here's a few examples...

"Nothing in the world sounds like a Jazzmaster but a Jazzmaster"...

"Nothing in the world sounds like a ES-150 but a ES-150"...

"Nothing in the world sounds like a White Falcon but a White Falcon"...

See, now aren't all of the above statements true???

I'm not a Strat hater, far from it but that statement always buged me.

As for playing everything with a Strat sure you can bet then again....same type of dumb ass statement...you can play anything in the world on any guitar...I mean, do Strat have notes on them that Les Pauls or don't?? Is it impossible to play Country on an SG...can you not play jazz on a Mustang...can one not play a shuffle on a Gretsch...

I mean, really...what are we asking ourselves??

I say all guitars are tools and I will use whatever too I feel does the job best...

I agree with you man. Basically one can play just about any music on any electric guitar. Many factors affect the ultimate tone of guitar, including amp, effect, environment, pickup, even cables. Accordingly if you aim for tone, there is no reason to pay ****load of cash for a hi end guitar because in the end the guitar isn't the sole dominating factor. Guitar players and consumers for that matter are victims of marketing techniques called branding and public image manipulation. For example, the cost of a Gibson LP is four times that of Epiphone LP but the tonal gap isn't that wide. People buy expensive guitars for personal satisfaction and image, not tone, and sadly a lot of people don't realize this.

'Kramer Guy' won't play anything but a Strat??? :eyecrazy: What am I missing here? It would be like Blueman335 saying he won't play anything but a Tele.
