Is it typical to wait > 5 weeks for an amplifier repair?

I sent my amp to a well-known amp manufacturer - won't mention name yet - for a repair. That was 5 weeks ago. There's only 1 person that I can contact, a sales rep. He actually encouraged me to send it to them saying that given they manufacturer the amp the repair would be simple. I inquired after a week what was the status of the repair. I was told that the amp tech is swamped, but he'll be making some time for repairs soon. He says to keep checking back. When I called the manufacturer on the phone at week 3 he said the same thing, and he added that it typically takes 4 to 5 weeks to do a repair! But now, it's been 5 weeks and the thing is probably still sitting there. I'm just wondering, why wouldn't they realize that a customer would find the wait ridiculously absurd at this point? Or, do I not understand something about amplifier companies and apparently this kind of wait is typical?

I've had something like that take place with a guitar - took 4 months.

Depends on what type of company. If we're talking small, boutique amp manufacturer (Bogner, Friedman), I don't think that is unusual. If we're talking large-scale operation (Jet City, Orange, Marshall), it is too long. They should have a service tech just for repairs and refurbishing.

good techs take forever! my last rounds were 3-5 weeks

I'm good with waiting if my expectations are set appropriately. If its going to take a long time to get through the queue, tell me.

To me, it's about communication. If I ask them how long it will take, and they tell me 6-8 weeks, I'm cool with that. Or any amount of time, for that matter, if they tell me up front.
If they say nothing about time . . . I'm cautious.

I would much rather wait for a good tech that does it right the first time! I hate techs that make the quick fix but cost a ton cause they did it wrong and then it broke later on!

just like car repairs, but it takes weeeeeeks...

On the phone, the sales rep already told me it typically takes 4 to 5 weeks. It's already 5 weeks.

Sometimes people in this business run long. It's not unheard of. Over on The Gear Page, where you have a bunch of people ordering multi thousand dollar custom guitars, I hear regularly of people being told 10-14 months, sometimes more and sometimes less, and they don't get the guitar for two to three years.

the good ones run on the end of the estimate, just pester em a little and theyll finish right before 6 weekz

I never pester cause I fear shabby work which I have received many times from these mofos!

Well Mesa for example has regional authorized techs, for warranty issues. When I had work done under warranty I took it to my authorized guy and he had it back inside the 2 week window required of him by Mesa. And no shipping delays this way too. But a smaller company than Mesa may just require you to send it in to them since they don't have a network of techs. 5 weeks outside of shipping delays seems longish.

Re: Is it typical to wait > 5 weeks for an amplifier repair?

I was told 2014 may be a good year for my amp repair. My mate has had it since 2012!

Re: Is it typical to wait > 5 weeks for an amplifier repair?

If a tech is not busy, find one that is. Warranty service regional guys are often total crap. Had an issue with two well known brands over the years. Regional techs kept both for weeks and didn't fix either amp.

I found that if they think you are a hobbyist, home amateur, they may prioritize 'working' musicians ahead of you. Without being rude, impatient/insulting, make the point that you have booked gigs (and here are the upcoming dates...), recording sessions, whatever, and that you really need the repairs completed by those dates. I've found if you are working and have dates, you can get taken care of when there is a deadline. If you don't give them a deadline, your gear tends to go to the back of the line.

The other thing I've found that sometimes helps is if you make friends with the tech, show an interest in their work, they will take care of you.

From a local repair person, no. From an amp factory...I'd not be surprised in the least.

Re: Is it typical to wait > 5 weeks for an amplifier repair?

Just to update, it seems that getting the company to tell you an actual date to expect the repair by is the way to go. When I did this they felt enough pressure to do it by the next day. I can't complain now that they finally got the repair done. Seems like if the company is small you need to wait longer (5 to 6 weeks).
