Is it worth replacing a bridge?

I'm getting sick of my guitar's bridge (strat, Highway 1). The trem bar is stiff, and I can't help but wonder how my tone would improve if I replaced it. Is it worth it?

It sounds more like the bridge just needs setting up properly rather than replacing.
Although if you were to replace it, save yourself the hassle and get a hard tail.

+1, I'd try getting it properly adjusted first. Pick up a copy of Dan Erlewine's "How to make your Electric Guitar Play Great', there's a great section on Strat trem adjustment. I always blocked mine off untill I read this, now I love a Strat trem. It worked on my nephew's Affinity Strat, too. Both have a nice loose feel with 2 springs, and both stay in tune fairly well. No Floyd dives, but that's what Floyds are for.

If it is stiff, loose the springs in the trem cavity. There are 2 screws that go into the body through the trem claw. Loosen those until you get what you are looking for.

Re: Is it worth replacing a bridge?

The bridge itself is not stiff, it's the bar. Once I wind it in, it becomes so stiff it is hard to move side to side, yet the **** thing is still wobbly (if that makes sense). It's almost like the bar doesn't fit in the bridge, or the threads are all messed up.

Re: Is it worth replacing a bridge?

So the problem is the trem arm and you want to change the whole bridge??
Get a new trem arm, one which fits. Or, if it is a press fit, get some of that kevlar tape (is it kevlar? whatever that rubbery thin tape you wrap on the threads of shower head threads) and stick that in. Or something.

Re: Is it worth replacing a bridge?

i've had a few trem arms wobble around because the threaded hole is not cut well or the abuse as made the hole more oval.... i love Fenders idea of adding that little spring in there to keep the trem arm from moving and wobbleing around.... only thing is every player loses that spring....

i've seen players stick other things in there... one was a piece of leather guitar strap.. just a small piece so the trem arm squeezes it in the bottom of threaded hole in the block... i remember hearing of players putting other things in there as well.... rubber...
