Is my new eminence speaker faulty??

Finally purchased a new speaker for my 1 x 12 combo. Opted for the Eminence Tonespotter.

Installed it yesterday. Took a while but no issues.

Clean the speaker sounds great – REALLY balanced. However, if I use overdrive/dist I experience strange buzzy and fizzy ghosts notes/undertones.

Can’t tell whether the new speaker just needs breaking in or whether it’s faulty - in which case I need to return it with 27 days.

The speaker was bought new – I checked it over – no sign of any damage. I haven’t checked tried swapping tubes yet but I will do later.

I have previously used celestions and have not experience anything like this, even when they were new.

Any thoughts???

Do I persevere with it or send it back asap?

Sounds like cone cry.

Celestion uses heavy damping around the edge surround to eliminate cone cry. You know: that sticky gooey stuff.

Sounds like Emmi should have used more goo on your speaker.

Some speaker builders have more of a problem with cone cry than others. Many Weber 12's I've owned suffered from cone cry but when I sent them back for more goo the speakers returned sounding a lot less bright and lively.

It's a trade off.

How close is your combo to a wall behind it?

I have noticed several open back combos do this. It might be as simple as pulling it away from the wall.???
