Is paper the next tonewood?

Re: Is paper the next tonewood?

I think I read once a guitar was made out of papier mache back in 1800's. I'm looking forward to seeing a Styrocaster

I wonder how that fretboard would feel like.

And yeah, sounded super-thin but still like a Strat, which means that the pickguard assembly is a huge part of the tone, just not all of it.

Also gave me the impression that it got out of tune quickly/easily.
Honestly I wouldn't expect it to last for too long...

With that guitar, 'shredding' could take on a whole new meaning ...

although it's probably more an instrument for beginners, not a hot player or anyone 'burning up the fretboard' (they'd probably convert it into an ash body very quickly) ...

But very suitable for those times when people ask for clips .... just send some paper clips.

It looks like avant-garde residential architecture for a community of bees.

It might surprise people how long that stuff will last. There are guys using decades old paper micarta archery equipment that's under more pressure and with more cyclical flex than wood and have lasted better than their wooden counterparts. Plus today's resins are by far superior to the 60's glues, much more stable.

Re: Is paper the next tonewood?

For the ultimate in parting-out old Fenders, we could tkae the bodies and necks of old Strats and Teles, run them through a chipper, throw the chips in a digester, make paper out of them, and then make guitars out of the paper. Makes perfect sense, especially if you sell all the other parts on eBay.

As Crusty alluded, my cat would like to spend 15 quality minutes with that guitar. He's way into shredding.
