Is the Antiquity 'bucker a relic'ed Seth Lover ?

Just a quick two questions !

1) Is the Antiquity Humbucker a Seth Lover with only an aged/relic'ed Nickle cover over it ?
If not, how do they differ ?

Can these pu's handel med amounts of gain/fuzz and massive amounts of volume without feedback/weird unwanted noise ?

I dont know. I always thought it was a reliced seth.75 zepp is prety high gain.You'd probably be ok, depending on the guitar and amp. Ive heard reports of sqraling like pigs and also reports of no problems. The maoin thing they warn about is to be carefull about super high gain stuff like Bogners and with unpotted pickups.

Amps, well, right now i have a little Vox AC15, but lets look into the future, and it will most likely be something like a Marshall VintageModern or Orange Rocker50, with the Laney Toni Iommi-sig being the "out-side-horse", so to speak !

Seth's and Ants are not the same...different magnets, different wire, different winds and different covers...very differetn to my ears!

On the potting issue...I prefer the tone of non potted pickups and in my experience they do fine under my playing...not high gain but still nasty and fuzzy...

Ant=like picking up a original PAF out of a old Gibson now. Warmer and Sweeter,

Seth=like going back to the late 50's and picking a PAF out of a new gibson. Brighter and a little more aggressive from what I remember from playing a set.

Hmm...

The Seth's to me are a little, almost quacky...while the Ants are a warmer more round warmer tone...not to say that the Seths are not warm and round but the Ants are more so. Also, the Ants have a very woody sounding...almost like you can hear the wood in the guitar but they are a little weak souding...I belive due to the aged magnets however I personally belive that is where the wood character comes from so I deal with the weak part...they are by no means wimpy but thy are not as stout as Seths or 59's to me.

The potting thing could very well be my imnagination but everytime I play a non potted pickup I feel likteh pickup is more alive and has a deeper more 3D bass to it...the biggie is the alive thing...because it's no potted it's on the verge of feedback almost all the time and I for one really like that.

I haven't tried Ants, but I'll say that my Hamer Artist with the stock Seths through my tweed Deluxe has righteous, on-the-edge tone with beaucoup harmonics. My take is that Seths have A2 warmth and a little bite from being non potted.

I do know that MJ gets requests to pot Seths, FWIW.

well on your neck you will have a warm round bass with a weak kind of scooped mid and softer almost gentle high end. the growl of an SG really will come through. gosh, i want Ants in a VOS SG someday!!!

The bridge will be agressive and sometimes britle I guess. Roll back your tone pot and kick on some fuzz and thats what I love the Seth Bridge for. also the volume knob gets alot of tones out of a single channel amp.

Myself I love the way a unpotted pickup kind of "jumps out from under the covers!" But it can be unstable if you like any saturation. at the point where some potted buckers get a little noisey and hissy with gain you will prob squeel with a unpotted pickup.

But its really high SPL that will kill it. anything that pushes your heart into your chest (40watts+) will prob not love an unpotted PU.

I got rid of my seth neck and ants because i had a 80watt traynor at the time. *kicks self*

All you gotta do is try it and see...all those guys in the old days got along just fine most of the time w/o potted pickups and plenty of guys still do...

I've just started using my L.P (one in the thread about rewire kits!) and both the Bro and Seth (Bridge in the neck slot) are unpotted. Even at loud volumes and moderate gain I am able to control unwanted feedback 99% of the time. We play anything from AC/DC > Bad Co > Lizzy > Zep > Schenker Group > Sabbath and I don't have any major problems. In saying that, I only recently re-installed the Seth... but I uncovered it. With the cover it was no use to me, but uncovered it's great... AND double cream to go with the Bro. If you're looking for AC/DC sound I have to say bro.... you need a BROBUCKER. To me it's Angus in a pick up! All the best. Oh yeah, my amps... Cornford MK50 and Hellcat with gain anything between 5 and 8 if that helps?

Yeah, though I don't really need them most of the time. I use the drive in the amps most of the time, but i have a Teese Wizard/ Area 51 wah/ Peterson Stomp tuner/ Keeley Fuzz Head/ M.I Audio Crunchbox and soon a Retro sonic chorus in the front, and then a DD3 and then MXR Micro Amp in the loop. The Fuzz Head and Crunchbox are really for different flavors of drive as I prefer the amps. But the MXR in the loop gives a great big clean boost for lead breaks. The tone I really like is just the amps... NOT that versatile as they aren't multi channel etc but great for what I need. Thanks.

The first Sabbath albums were done with P-90ties.

I cannot recommend unpotted pickups for music like that. While it is true that high-quality unpotted pickups are much less microphonic that potted junk pickups there's still a problem. Many average musicians and even some pickup makers waive off this issue, but only because they can't imagine how much gain people use at what volumes.

In the SG I'd try Jazz or maybe '59s for the sound you are looking for.

The Antiquities are extremely picky about the guitar they are in. In a hamsterpiece Les Paul they sound great. They just sound lame and dull in many guitars. They are kind of a lame'n'dull intensifier if the base guitar has any of that. And they don't like aggressive sounding base guitars either, which your SG might be.

I think you'll find that P-90ties hum too much for heavy work.

There's some heavy music played with no too much gain, but you gotta decide whether that's what you are. It's rare today
