Is the Brobucker the Screamin' Demon without the allen screws?

I thought i read somewhere that the Demon is an over-wound 59. if its 43 gauge wire, then its like a super under-wound Custom 5.

Reason im asking is that I have basically become obsessed with Vivian Campbell's modern Last in Line Live tone with his 77 LP with 59s. I have a set of NOS reversed zebra 59s from the 80s zebra i want to put into my 78 LP Standard. If I find the 59B to be too weak, I would want to go with a Brobucker.

59s have scooped mids.

I've never played the brobucker but understand they have a good bit more mids than a 59 would do. If so that would be very different sounding.

The Demon's coils are really empty. It's 43 or 42.5, but not 42.

Tonally, the Demon is nothing like the '59. It's tighter, more of a singlecoil vibe instead of the fluid humbucker tone, it's got a more piercing high end, tighter lows. The only thing in common is the mid dip but even that's voiced differently.

Overwinding 42 awg wire makes for a lousy pickup, generally speaking. It gives you so much midrange, with flabby lows.

To overwind a pickup doesn't make it hotter, per se.

For example. I have 2 tele's, one with a JB/Jazz set, the other with Lundgren Black Heaven set. The Lundgren's are +- 9.5K but are LOUD. The bridge pickup feels and sounds way more aggressive and louder than the JB.

DCR, and the amount of wire you put on a bobbin, only goes so far into determining how much output you get.

Yeah, the Demon is 43awg. Not an underwound C5 either. It uses different wire. It is its own formula and wind. Way different characteristics from the ‘59 too. The EQ chart may show it having a scoop in the mids but it’s not as drastic as it may seem. There’s actually a good amount of mids to the Demon. The Brobucker is completely different from all of them.

I had my Brobucker in my Epi Elitist LP Custom. I thought it sounded like a PAF with some thickness to the mids. Kind of perfect for a LP and I had it paired with the 50SR that came in my Elitist.

My Demon is still sitting on my parts shelf, but my buddy has one in his Superstrat. If I close my eyes it sounds like George was trying to bring the Distortion EQ curve down to something more open/with less compression.

Thanks for the clarification everybody. I guess i will go with the 59BJ in my LP Standard and see how it goes. the 12BJ i have will become a neck pickup in another project sometime

As it happens, I own Gearjonesers Brobucker, and IME it sits in between an A2P and a loud Seth. A2P has a wide mid-range hump, Seth has a narrow honk. The Brobucker has a moderate mid peak that is shifted higher than a Seth and makes it chimey when clean and vocal when distorted. And it has a little more push to it than the other PAF-types.

My Screamin Demon sounds nothing like it. I will say however, that putting hex heads in a 59 or a Custom 5 will push them closer to a Demon sound (but still a little different - the Demon still has a little bit in the mids to me, the 59 and Custom get pretty scooped out); hex heads make a significant overwhelming change to pickups. Makes any pickup very scooped and tighter. I need to try filisters in a Demon to see what kind of pickup it might be normally.

There are so many bridge options these days that the plain old 59B tends to be overshadowed, or at least taken for granted.
It's a great pickup in its own right, and not as scooped IMO as most online comments would lead you to believe.
I used a 59 set happily in a Les Paul for decades and never found it lacking for mids.
Of course, that was through Boogie amps with some gain - a clean Fender would be a different situation.
The old SH-1 magnets were warmer sounding, but that I don't think that affected the mids much except by contrast.

The other thing about both neck and bridge SH-1 models is that they take various different magnet famously well.
Want thicker mids/softer attack from a 59B? Give it an unoriented A5. More beef/less sparkle, try A6. Extra horsepower & clank, A8.
Going lighter instead of heavier, 59s do really well with A2, A3, and A4.
There was a forum member years ago who loved ceramic in a 59B. Called it a fire breathing monster.
