Is the custom 5 an overwound 59 or...

is a pick up made to sound like a 59 with more output?

What i mean is that a pick up with same structure and same magnet but overwound (8k vs 14k) sound in a different way...more bass...more mids and less treble..
So the C5 sounds like a 59 with more output or has more bass..more mids and less treble?

Tnx a lot!

I don't know about the technical details, but it is designed to be a 59 w/more bass, and greater overall output.

The Custom series line of pups are variations on a theme of "pumped up 59", and the C5 is supposed to be the closest to "vintage".

I use one in the bridge of my Hamer, 59 in the neck. I love it! I wanted a pup that had some extra beef, but wasn't so hot that it completely lost the vintage vibe. For me, it has worked out very well!

Re: Is the custom 5 an overwound 59 or...

I suppose you could think of it that way. The Custom is described as having a beefed up PAF tone with a ceramic magnet. The C5 has the same type of magnet as a 59.

Re: Is the custom 5 an overwound 59 or...

The Custom coil is using thinner wire (awg43) to get more winds, and more resistance per wind, onto about the same size of coils.

Originally it was used with the Ceramic magnet, somewhat doing what the first high-output distortion type pickups were doing, but with a standard size magnet.

Stuffing an A5 magnet under the Custom coils is a forum idea.

There's also an A2 variant to deaden up overly bright guitars.

tnx a lot for answer...
i've to change the pick ups on my santana se...very good guitar...rich acoustically..stock are not bad..but cannot split and are very middy and "big" for rithm part...great for santana sound...

Do you think it's a good match for santana sound 59 and C5?
If i dont' remember bad in his first prs he used 59 and custom...

Re: Is the custom 5 an overwound 59 or...

Well, if he used the Custom then that's the one with the ceramic magnet, which compresses more (although they sound very similar played light).

I couldn't quite parse that, do you want middy and big or is that what you don't like about your existing pickups?

Re: Is the custom 5 an overwound 59 or...

I've always liked C-5's and 59B's, so the day I discovered the C5/59 hybrid, I was very pleased. Now, that's one of my favorite pickups. The only problem is that you have to know how to disassemble and assemble a pickup. I wonder if Duncan offers them as a Floor Shop Custom, meaning it's still the regular price, NOT CS prices. Time for a new thread!

no they cant, it infringes on a dimarzio patent

These dudes are funny. Did you see the dorks at the Patent Office gave them a patent for having some spacer between magnet and polepieces?

Anyway, here's the patent in question:
http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-...N/dimarzio+AND+coils&RS=AN/dimarzio+AND+coils

A transducer for a stringed musical instrument includes a pair of coils mounted adjacent each string of the instrument. The coils have substantially the same number of turns of electrically conducting wire wound thereon, and the wires constituting the coils are of different gauges.

I don't think that a Custom/PAF hybrid would be covered. That hybrid does have coils with wires of different gauges. But the coils are wound to about the same volume, not to the same number of winds.

Re: Is the custom 5 an overwound 59 or...

they're more than good for solo part...but it's quite difficult to obtain a sound for light rithm part...if they could split i'll never change them..but in tuscany, italy...where i live i can't find anyone that transform the pick up from 2 to 4 conductor...
