Is the EVH pickup a scam?

Re: Is the EVH pickup a scam?

Since when is clever marketing a scam? To me, a scam is marketing something by giving the public the impression a product is something it's NOT. I don't see that here. As I said before, SD fully explains that EVH = Evenly Voiced Harmonics, and has even changed the name to something completely different. Any other association made to the initials by the public (no matter how beneficial) is out of their hands.

Re: Is the EVH pickup a scam?

You have the nerve to describe the people who replied to your post as negative!

You looked in the mirror lately?

Re: Is the EVH pickup a scam?

Hey – if Seymour Duncan made the 78 model a regular production pickup and sold it for their normal retail prices, then it wouldn't be a scam.

After all, this is just a veiled ad:

I was trying to be polite in calling the marketing clever. I think it's dishonest to call a pickup your turning out in huge batches a "custom" item.

Did you stop to think that it might not be priced the same as the other pickups even if it WAS a production model? Look at the Antiquity line...

Re: Is the EVH pickup a scam?

If it ever becomes a production model the price will come down yes. At current it is a Custom Shop model and worth every penny.

It's made to order... that implies "custom" IMO.

Everybody has given you the facts about the pup name and the fact that it IS NOT in the new Van Halen guitars, but you seem to be upset about the price...let me tell you this. I have a few pickups from the Custom Shop at Duncan, and in fact I have a set of Strat pickups on the way as I type this! Go to EMG, DiMarzio, Bill Lawrence, Evans, Fender, Gibson, Kinman, or just about any other major pickup maker and ask them to custom make you a pickup and see how fast you get laughed at, then when you find a maker that will do one off stuff for you look at the price...it will be WAY more than the prices at Duncan. I love Duncan pickups, and IMO the prices are not high at all...if you don't want to pay $160.00 for a pickup then don't, but don't tell us that we are getting scammed if we want to.

Perhaps. But why would it cost more than a Custom Custom? :saeek:

That's the first post that really made sense to me. I'll be quiet.

Why is that?
  • Would it be represented as something different?
  • Would it perform differently?
"Scam" implies fraud. There's no deception in the sale of the '78 pickup. The pickup is not represented as anything more than a particularly punchy pickup (which it definitely is). They choose not to make it a production pickup. Seymour, Evan, et al, do not owe us an explanation about the reasons why.

Just because you don't like the asking price doesn't mean it's a scam or even overpriced. You might also feel that gas is too expensive but that doesn't mean it's a scam. Nobody's misrepresenting the pickup and nobody's forcing you to buy 'em. If the price is too high, find a more affordable substitute. They're priced high enough that there are some other premium pickups (WCR, Voodoo Pickups, etc.) that I'll consider the next time I'm looking for pups.

Because it's not the same pickup. Possibly made of better materials, hand wound, etc etc. Why is an Antiquity I single coil more expensive than an SSL-1?

Re: Is the EVH pickup a scam?

Edit: Nevermind . . . everyone else answered better than me. :laugh2:

Re: Is the EVH pickup a scam?

So let me ask ya, Donkey......Are you gonna get one? You seem to be interested in it, to make it your first post. he he

Re: Is the EVH pickup a scam?

If you really want to nail that tone... the 59/Custom Hybrid is the best pickup for it... especially if the guitar has a Floyd Rose on it.

I bought one a few years ago. I'd like to put one in another guitar. I thought it would be a production p'up by now. :duh:
