Is The MXR Six Band EQ Any Good? Anything Better?

I’m looking for a good EQ pedal to replace my old (Late 80s / early 90s) Ibanez GE-10 Graphic EQ pedal. The EQ still works fine and is not too noisy, but isn’t completely transparent. When all the sliders are flat and comparing the sound of the pedal when on and off, it sounds noticeably different.

I’m looking for something that’s built like a tank and transparent. I don’t want a Boss GE-7. I don’t care if there popular, I don’t want a Boss anywhere on my board.

I’m not looking to do much sound shaping, more of a volume / mid boost.

The MXR Ten Band EQ looks cool, but is overkill for my needs and won’t fit on my board.

So, I’m looking at the MXR Six Band EQ… Is it Transparent? Is it too noisy? Anything better I should check out?

Check out the danelectro fish and chips. Cheep and gets the job done great.

The MXR 10 band is more than just a few bands more than the six band EQ...it also has pre- and post- EQ gain sliders. Worth making space on your board, IMHO.

But the "fish and chips" also works very well and is cheap and small.

The MXR 6band EQ is very good pedal, definetly the 10 band it's better, but if you compare it with the noisy crap the Boss GE7 is, That small black pedal rocks

Re: Is The MXR Six Band EQ Any Good? Anything Better?

Sorry but I really have to ask why is the EQ being transparent important? I could see it being an issue if you turn it off and it effects the tone but why would you ever want to have the sliders at zero? If your never using it like that what does it matter?

Re: Is The MXR Six Band EQ Any Good? Anything Better?

I just sold my mxr 108 10 band eq pedal because I thought changed my tone for the worst. Even with the eq flat it seemed to suck all my tone and dynamics up and left me with a processed hifi solid state type sound. This happened in several different placements on my pedal board but was most noticeable when ran,in the fx loop of my amp. I bought it for my 6505+ but it did the same with my other tube amp as well. Im now going to try the boss eq pedal.

My MXR 10 band didn't have any affect at all on my tone in my effects loop. Can't imagine what you are describing. Must have been something wrong with your pedal. (Or your loop).

Re: Is The MXR Six Band EQ Any Good? Anything Better?

The mxr 6 band is a solid pedal. Does exactly what it is supposed to. I found that my best tones were had when I didn't use the pedal at all so I sold it. I have to limit my tweaking options because I will tweak all day and night and never play if I have too many knobs in front of me. Just consider the cliche: if it ain't broke don't fix it (same goes for BBE sonic maximizer). The best tone in most cases is guitar to amp, sometimes an od is great too, but eq pedals are completely overkill in my opinion unless you are really unhappy with your amp's eq section and would rather adjust with a pedal than buy a new amp that works for you.

Re: Is The MXR Six Band EQ Any Good? Anything Better?

There was nothing wrong with my loop and the pedal worked just fine but it seemed like it added its own color of sound on top of my tone. I just figured a eq pedal would be a little more transparent with less coloration and it seemed like the mxr had its own sound even with a flat setting . To me it kind of took away from some of the dynamics and feel that a tube amp has naturally. The op may like the mxr and the 6 band version may sound different. I would suggest trying a couple of eq pedals. I made the mistake of spending $118 on somthing I thought would enhace my sound but in my opinion it took away from my overall tone.

Re: Is The MXR Six Band EQ Any Good? Anything Better?

I still don't get it. When I run mine with all the sliders flat, I can't tell when it's on or off. Absolute unity of tone.

One of the best EQs I've ever played. Plus it's built like a tank.

Re: Is The MXR Six Band EQ Any Good? Anything Better?

Eqs all sound kinda "hard" to my ears. maybe its cos they are quite complex amplification circuits? Is this for use in the loop, or out front?
If it is as you say as a volume/mid boost, then you could look further afield from eqs and maybe try out something like a fatboost, or that RC thing from xotic. (i have not tried the xotic). Plenty of tone shaping with separate gain, bass and treble controls and are very natural sounding.

Try the T-Rex Tonebug Booster. I have one and I love it. I think it will do exactly what you're looking for.
