Famous pickups from other manufacturers are matched to the Seymour Duncan pickup that is closest in sound?

There are some super rare pickups that are no longer in production and it would be cool to have a "list" where people can research something from Seymour Duncan that would satisfy their needs.

Something like this has to exist somewhere.

I've never seen one, but if you have one of those super rare pickups, just ask about what would be the closest, and someone here is bound to know.

I have never seen one either

You are talking about peoples opinion anyway, so one person's bright is another's cut.

Just ask

It would be an interesting project to create a resource where you take a pickup model and then list the similarities and differences between several other models from various brands. Naturally, there would be a number of complaints, it is the internet after all.

What if:

We make a thread with bunch of adjectives and keep posting opinions from let's say 1-10 how well each adjective fit to some pickups we've familiar with. Whoever is willing to create and update the said thread could edit the first post with updated average of stats of each pickup.

It would balance to reasonably realistic sheet of statistics for pickups in the end. Assuming it lives long enough.

Or we could, ya know, use our guitars to make music.

There are not many pickups of Duncan that are trying to clone another.

Many that get close are a take on someone's tone more than anything else (like copying specs for example). But most are Seymour's own creation.

Agreed. But it would be useful to have a list of pickups (by various makers) where players rated them on a dozen of so characteristics based on personal experience. Not necessarily EQ, but other factors. Maybe a scale of 1-10 for things like loose-or-tight in the low end, fast-or-elastic pick attack, string-to-string chord definition under gain, and cleanup interactions with the volume knob.

One thing I like about the Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan websites is that they give a gauge of how much treble/mids/bass is in the pup and the relative output of each.

Also, describing a humbucker with respect to how it compares to a classic PAF is a pretty good way to get the roundabout sound you get.

This sort of comes down to personal experience. And some people have very strange perceptions of how a pickup sounds- I've heard several times how a 59 or Jazz sounds muddy in a particular guitar (?!?), but in the end, everyone hears something different.

^I could understand any humbucker being described as 'muddy,' for someone say accustomed to only single coils. Perhaps anyone who makes such a statement needs to try a greater breadth of gear before offering their opinion on anything, but I won't mistrust anyone's ears on what sounds good either.

Anyway- If you knew the measurements (wire gauge, resistance, inductance etc.) of what you wanted to copy, all that info is somewhere on this site/forum to determine what pickup was a closest match, not that you'd be guaranteed to get the same sound even if it was 100% spot on.

Sounds like you are describing all the pages on this forum.
