wouldn't that make the 59 too trebly and harsh?

Wasn't my experience. There were more mids, and more output. Certainly more aggressive. Sounds more like a low-output Custom than a harsh, trebly mess.

I have a very early custom with an alnico magent. When I run the guitar straight into a cranked tube amp, I get that lead tone from Aerosmith's 'Dream On'.

Just an observation about the alnico.

I dont think that the parallel sound of a Ceramic is too bad. Under full distortion it is great and for a very funky clean rhythm is sound its straight too. But i admit the parallel JB is better!
Hey what about sliding a A8 in the Ceramic Custom, which should give a looser version of a hot PAF like Lester said?

I dont think that the parallel sound of a Ceramic is too bad. Under full distortion it is great and for a very funky clean rhythm is sound its straight too. But i admit the parallel JB is better!

I was thinking about the a8 option, but I was also wondering how vintage it would sound. Especially since Les didn't mention it when he posted!

It could very well be. I love my Jon Moore hybrid (Big Dog).
