Fantastic! BUT, now I understand why you tease us with a guitar thread here and there... come on, I'd just love to see them all. You obviously have great taste with the ones I have seen so far so I'd like to see them all!

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I know what you´re trying to say, but this is definitely NOT the way I would have said it?

Do French, British, German, Spanish, Italian, Austrian, Belgian, Swiss, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Portugese, Russian, Israeli, Indian, Japanese, Brazilian, Mexican, Canadian, Australian, .... People have different destinies? Will they not experience the same apocalypse as everyone else? Do you know something that we all need to? :eek13:

Again, I know what you´re trying to say, but the way your statement is worded plays right into the hands of anti-american sentiment the world over by by placing our citizens on a pedestal and implying that our egotistical, materialistic wants are more important than other´s basic needs... And then you even make the "Bush Mistake" and declare that God wants it that way... ;)

BTW, the amish are a perfect counter-example to your statements. No materialism, no excess, but they´re still americans, and they most definitely also believe that they´re living as god intended.... So at least one of those viewpoints has to be wrong if god`s will is truly universal. ;)

So now you get philosophical on me Zerb. Just when we think you're a big brute who elbows old ladies out of your way, I find out there's a softer, gentler Zerb inside trying to come out. And politically correct? Never would have expected it. You could have knocked me over with a feather.

A bit of sarcasm old boy. As an American (and athiest), I've always enjoyed making fun of the average American. Superficial conformists in the mindless pursuit of material goods. Gotta love it. Very entertaining. For the life of me, I don't understand why so many people have wanted to emulate us. After all, we inflicted "The Love Boat" and "Barry Manilow" on the world. Besides, there's guys on this forum from all over the world collecting guitars too. It was the Japanese that taught us about guitar-collecting; that's when vintage guitars got expensive. Don't blame us, they started it!

Hey, how many Amish guitar players can you name off the top of your head? That's what I thought. God wouldn't have given us electricity and guitars if he didn't want us to use them. Same goes for credit cards & second mortgages...

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

^^ I apparently didn´t catch the irony, once more we agree :beerchug:

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I don't get it either - I like variety. But I guess if I was loaded I'd eventually end up with some similar guitars.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I've got more guitars than I need, for me it is several reasons.

1 Sentimental (someone got me this one or good memories)
2 different sound
3 projects projects.....more projects
4 not worth enough to sell (guitars that I don't play but aren't worth enough money to go to the trouble to sell or trade in)

Don't have any that are exactly the same though, can't explain that or maybe I have with one of the above??

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I know that if I had that many guitars I would use some standard, and some for alternate tunings, with backups and then maybe one with a capo so I wouldn't have to retune one guitar back and forth

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I have two of a few models because I found a second one in a different color. And it looked so cool I decided I needed one. So it's really not two of the exact same guitar. A guitar can look cool in more than just one color.

Thank you for your compliment dear sir. :fing2:

I just love guitars for all the right reasons. Many mentioned. I'm not married and dont have any children to feed and clothe nor a boat or hot rod. A got an occasional nice gal to hang around with, some fun guitars to play on and the infrequent jam to attend. Life IS Good.

More GOTWs to follow I'm sure. :dunno: :bigthumb:

Here is a fine example of a similar, yet, differant pair I've come to own.

Hamer Standard AKA KB (Korina Baby)

Dean Z AKA Katie Z :7:

Hamer Standard has a Duncan '59 pair IIRC and is straight out SMOOTH. The Dean has a pair of JBs and is a beast but dialed back a lil bit, Wonderful as a Dean Korina Z SHOULD be. RAWKER!!!

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I own 5 guitars. A Fender Telecaster, a Charvel Telecaster (that sounds like a strat), a Fender Jazzmaster, a Schecter Omen-6, and a Cort MR780FX acoustic.

They all sound completely different, not even the 2 Tele's sound anything like each other.

After looking at some pics of peoples guitars, I've seen alot of people buying the same guitar over and over again. Some peope have 5 les pauls, some have 5 strats. In some cases all the pickups are replaced with the one style of pickup in each guitar.

Other than investment, why do people buy guitars like this? I can understand have 2 guitars the same to serve as a backup for gigs, but up to 10 les pauls?

Educate me please.

you can have 2 guitars made from the same boards, come off the production line the same day with 1 digit difference in the seriel number and they would sound different... play different...

and i own many guitars and have doubles of a lot of them... i just like having back ups...

and i like Townshends idea of having 10 numbered LP's Teles or strats... LOL

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

It´s all about options. Sometimes you want thick and crunchy, sometimes you want bright and airy, sometimes ....

Same with food. I love spaghetti, and I love steak, but I don`t want to have to eat either every day for the rest of my life.

+1. I personally have a couple dozen guitars, none the same. I love them all. They are my passion. They are all exciting to play and to look at. It's not necessarily a functional thing with me (although I love the quest for tone, PU changes, mag swaps, wiring configurations, etc), it's more an esthetic and emotionally gratifying thing. I love all kinds of food too. And art. And music. (I'm NOT going to say girls because I'm married and that wouldn't be right to say...but who knows what lurks in the heart and mind of man:haha:).

Variety is the spice of life.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

Mattt answered it perfectly for me. Thanks bro!!:)

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I've got 4 Les Pauls right now and working on getting a fifth. 3 of them are set up identical, same pups everything. The fourth is awaiting some APII's. I tried a few different sets in the les Paul Custom to have some variety, but it's not "MY" sound, so it's getting a set of Alnico Pro II's as well. When I pick up another Standard, it will get the same pickups.

The reason I have multiple guitars that are pretty much the exact same, other than color, is because I like to change guitars when I'm playing out. I hate tuning between any songs and it's just easier to grab another guitar after every 2 songs or so. Plus it looks good.

The only things I have other than Les Pauls are a Tele for a couple of twangy songs, a Strat (wanting a 62 RI but the MIM will sufice for now) for some Steve Gaines style solos (It just doesn't sound right through a full sounding LP) and an SG for all my slide stuff.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

GAS is a horrible affliction. I have this many guitars (12, I think I'm at currently with a few projects in the works as well) but, I own this many simply (as been said) because I can. Simple as that. Do I need this many? Absolutely not but, I pay my bills on time and meet all other monetary commitments that I have. Fortunately, that doesn't leave me broke. I choose to spend my money on gear.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I don't get it either.

Mine are all very different.

Shredder, Tele, Strat, mutt, LP/P90, 335...

In my rack right now I have:

Jackson mutt: AlNiCo 5 PAF + ceramic single coil, vintage spec wiring, shred neck and light body

SX STL50 (Telecaster): stock

Fender Stratocaster: Mean90/S/S, Road Worn neck

Squier '51: P-Rails / Triple Shot + Little '59, Telecaster neck, Strat body

PRS SE Soapbar (Singlecut shape with two P90s): stock

Epiphone Dot Studio with Gibson Burstbucker Pros

That is a pretty wide swath, if you ask me.

+1. There's worse things to spend your money on. At least guitars and amps have a decent resale value.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

Mine are all very different. I wouldn't see any point in owning even 2 of the same kind of guitar. Unless it's the #1 axe and you are going on tour, and need that exact sound to be exactly the same from show to show, guaranteed.

But... there are certain models that some us are particularly fond of. For many that's LP's. Nothing else feels like or sounds like them. When you have a design or two that you really like, why not get a few of those? You can have a collection & still specialize in a model or two. That also allows you to rotate thru your guitars & not put as much wear on any of them.

Decades ago, I was horrified to find out that Ritchie Blackmore had 50 Strats. By today's standards that's very modest (Rick Neilsen has 4,000 guitars, and Angus has "More SG's than he can count"). A dozen or two guitars is not excessive. Whether you have a variety or focus on one type, is up to you. You only live once. Do what you enjoy, buy what you can afford.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I might be the odd man out here, and while I do have a few guitars, I've basically stuck to the one main guitar for my whole professional career. I've had 2 guitars built out of Warmoth parts and with the same electronics as my Strat which were intended as string breakers and backups. One of them is now in pieces and the other hasn't been played in quite a while. I bought a PRS Custom in '89 that I tried to like for a year, but then realised it wasn't for me and I sold it. A few years ago I picked up a '78 Ibanez Silver Series 'Lawsuit' Strat because I remember liking them better than most Fenders of that era, which wasn't really difficult because Fenders of that era were junk.

The one thing that I've never owned that I think I would bond well with is a 60's 335. But I've never played a Les Paul I really liked, even the vintage ones. I love what great LP players do with them, but I just don't think they're for me. I guess I haven't really been too adventurous when it comes to guitars, I just found one that was magnificent early in my career and stuck to it. Oddly enough, if I was going to spend a lot of money on another guitar, it would be a good L series Strat, but even then, it would have to be something incredible to get me away from Old Faithful.

In reality, I don't subscribe to the concept that you need a bunch of different guitars to achieve enough sonic differences to make a wide range of music. I can remember one occasion when my guitar didn't cut it, and it was a jingle session where the guy wanted 'something jazzy.' In which case, I not only had the wrong guitar, but I was also the wrong guitarist, because I can't play jazz to save myself. The rest of my years, my old Strat has managed to provide all of the tones I've needed, and all of a high quality.

But I can certainly understand the desire to own lots of beautiful instruments. As has been mentioned here, there are much worse things to spend your money on, and if owning, maintaining, playing and admiring them brings you joy, I can see no possible harm in that. Guitars can be beautiful things.

Cheers................................... wahwah

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

dunno, i always tend to sound the same on any guitar i play. i have about 5, which i guess isn't many for a professional.
collecting isn't my thing. when buying an instrument, i don't go for a specific sound, because it will end up sounding the same in the end. i go for ergonomics, mostly- it has to balance right and feel right.
