Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

'cause it's cheaper than having multiple wives

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I own 5 guitars. A Fender Telecaster, a Charvel Telecaster (that sounds like a strat), a Fender Jazzmaster, a Schecter Omen-6, and a Cort MR780FX acoustic.

They all sound completely different, not even the 2 Tele's sound anything like each other.

After looking at some pics of peoples guitars, I've seen alot of people buying the same guitar over and over again. Some peope have 5 les pauls, some have 5 strats. In some cases all the pickups are replaced with the one style of pickup in each guitar.

Other than investment, why do people buy guitars like this? I can understand have 2 guitars the same to serve as a backup for gigs, but up to 10 les pauls?

Educate me please.

ONE WORD! gas.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

different tuning also.
i like to have a guitar for each tuning i use plus a cheaper back up guitar

how ever all my metal guitars i like to sound simular so they all have blackout neck in bridge with various neck pups

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I used to want one of everything. Be it a strat, tele, floyd equipped super strat, semi hollow, les paul, explorer. Load of amps, pedals etc. Straight up GAS really. I was never a big spender so didnt get anywhere near owning half the things I GASed after. Having gigged more and more and seen the real world side of things, for my needs i found having loads if gear was a bit of a hindrance. Nowadays i prefer to keep the gear side of things simple. As a result I am a million times the player i was last year, both in terms of my technical ability and my ability to jam with others

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

+1. If you love guitars, sometimes you buy them just to put different PU's and wirings in them. I think a number of us do it. It's normal, it's healthy.

Like having many different girlfriends with different sized...enhancements! Not that I would know anything about that anymore. :banghead:

While we may or may not be able to do that with women, we can all do it with guitars.

My Love for the '57 tailfin is covered with the Explorer shape.

My '05 Dean Bass

Looks even bigger as a Bass it seems when I first pick it up each time.

Mugging it up for the camera at Dean's Open House in 2006. That is a NICE Dean USA TransBlue V in the other fellas hands.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

Just watched "It Might Get Loud" during which the Edge explained to Jimmy Page and Jack White that he uses a different guitar for almost every song. I have different guitars for different tones or tunings.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

^^ That´s actually true, when I saw them back in the 90s the only guitar that was out for more than 1 song was his explorer.

If the Edge were to take his sonic architect approach to the next level, he´d be the first artist that has to switch racks on stage :laugh2:

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

A little off the subject but during "It Might Get Loud" (which I recommend) Page shows them how to play Ramble On which is quite cool. Jack White was born at the wrong time as he is a huge Son House fan. The Edge shows off a simplistic two not riff that when sent through his effects sound great but without effects well…basic and bland would be an overstatement. JP used an incredible single cutaway hollow body to play In My Time of Dying.

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

^^ Edge´s riff in question is the riff to Sunday Bloody Sunday. And yes, without delay the riff dies completely, and without the rest of the effects it just sounds too "bland" to be U2. Biut when combined with Edge´s talent for soundscaping, it becomes a classic riff that even non musicians the world over can identify.

But that´s Edge for ya, he´s never described himself as even remotely good, but openly says that most of his style comes from his effects and the riffs that suddenly develop with different tones. As such I feel he was a good counterpoint to the virtuosity of Page and attitude of White, because effects are a big facet of the electric guitar and very few people know their way around a powerful rack system as well as Edge does ;)

Virtuosity? huh? (re, Page)
Yeah he was influential and wrote a lot of great riffs, but that doesn't make him a virtuoso.
Don't quite think Page has the chops of Allans Holdsworth or Michael Amott

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

Compared to Edge and Jack White´s much more simplistic playing, I think it´s fair to describe Page as a virtuoso when viewed from a technical and theoretical standpoint. Especially when one considers that his musical background runs MUCH deeper than just Led Zeppelin, Page has played on records 99% of the world would never expect, especially during his teens. ;)

But either way, I never meant to equate his chops to those of more technical guitarists like Holdsworth, Vai, or Friedman... especially since unlike Holdsworth and Vai, Page´s music doesn`t just bore me to death but actually grips me and makes me want to feel what he´s feeling when he plays. ;) :beerchug:

The last few posts remind me of why Life IS Good! Carry on. :approve:

"...One man's pleasure is another man's pain,
one man's loss is another man's gain...."

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

Hey, that wasn't a bash on Page.
He used to be one of my big influences and I would definitely listen to early Led Zep any day over Holdsworth (for all his skill, I find Holdsworth too "cerebral" really, I just can't feel it most of the time).
It's just more of a point that I like terms to be used in a more correct manner, not in a "relative to this guy" kinda way.
But carry on I guess :laugh2:

+1. Absolutely! Page in his early Zep days was on fire, widely respected by his peers as a true virtuoso. While not as fast as the shredders who came later, his playing had far more emotion & depth. It ain't all about speed, boys. There's always someone faster. It's about expressing what's inside of you. Hendrix wasn't at the technical level of the shredders either, but there's not one of them that would say they're better than he was. Hendrix changed music more than all of these guys put together.

Nor did I see it as a dig at Page, I merely wanted to clarify my statement. BTW I agree with your point 100%, as I´m normally also one of those "buy a dictionary and look up what that word actually means, dillhole" guys :beerchug:

Re: Is there something I dont get about owning many guitars?

I rate Page as an overall virtuoso of the electric guitar. No question about it at all.

For a working guitar player, it is always good to have a similar sounding backup for stage work. Especially locking nut guitars where a broken string can be a show stopper.
