Is there such a thing as a dud?

Hi all, been a while but I'm back

I just installed a new pickup that I thought would be the Cat's meow in the neck of my V but it's not as good as the same pickup in another guitar. In the other guitar it has zing and is sweet and dynamic. This is just what I need to counteract the heavy sound of the CC bridge in the V so I put it in the neck but it's kind of dull. The pickup is an A2Pn. Same value pots and caps and same body wood (mahog/maple. A '59 in the neck of this axe was sharp and biting by comparison.

Anyway this got me thinking, I have run into this before and I know a certain amount of this is the guitar itself but is it possible that some pickups are just duds? I mean, it seems like I have had the same pickups in guitars before and one would sound great while the other would sound just ok. Anybody else experience this or is it my imginachkins?

Could be a bad cap or pot. It would be easiest to check this first. If it is the pickup, there is always the 21 day exchange policy.

One of my favorite examples of this phenomenon is the 59's in my Predator/Patriot. Those are the same guitar except for the Kahler Flyer bridge in the Predator. The output jack is mounted to the pickguard, so you can lift the whole electronics assembly out of one, and drop it into the other. When I first got my 59's, I put them in the Patriot. They were shrill and harsh. Very ice-picky. If that had been my only guitar, I would've thought 59's to be bad pups. I moved them to the Predator and they became warm and "jazzy/bluesy" - one of my favorite pup sets.

I imagine the opposite would happen if I used a warm pup in the Predator first. Especially something that didn't have a lot of brightness would sound dull in the Predator. Its amazing the difference a bridge can make.

Yeah, I suppose that's what's happening here. This is in my Dean V in my avatar. I have a CC in the bridge and it sounds great - nice and chunky and clear but the A2P in the neck just sounds muddy to me. By contrast, the A2P in my Dean Hardtail sounds bright and almost single-coil like but very sweet. I think what I really need is a P90 in the neck of the V

Yes. They come in boxes with the letters GFS on the outside.

well what do ya know another reason not to get the A2pro for the neck of my LP.
i want humbucker sound not single coil.
