Someone on another forum reckons humbucker sized P90s sound more like overwound Strat single coils.
I'd like to buy a Les Paul at some point and change it to an all P90 guitar, but with the option to convert it back to regular humbuckers. No router work involved.
P-90s are great in a LP. GFS makes a couple really good sounding humbucker sized P-90s for pretty cheap, no modification necessary. The "Mean 90" is very full sounding with lots of mids. The "Dream 90" is a bit brighter with more bite. I love both, but for a LP I'd go with the "Dream" (my favorite).
A Les Paul with P-90's is a beautiful thing. I have a SG Jr with a single dog-ear and working on a Les Paul Jr DC that will also have a dog-ear. A good P-90 is hard to beat.
I do like P90s, but I'm worried about maybe buying a Les Paul or another SG, Epiphone let alone full Gibson, without being able to convert "back" to humbuckers if I fall out of love with them.

If you're gonna buy a LP or SG just for the sole purpose of P-90's, you're doing it wrong. Go whole hog and get one with P-90's already. A humbucker sized P-90 does not sound the same as a full-size P-90. The magnetic field and coil size is different. And as Ace mentioned, DiMarzio makes P-90 sized humbuckers and the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop can do the same. But honestly, a black Les Paul with a couple of soap bar P-90's..... tonal goodness.
