Is there such thing...

As a single piece neck through guitar? It sounds like something PRS or Suhr might try, as in carving a body and a neck out of a single slab of wood. I know it would be pricey, but has anyone seen one?

Re: Is there such thing...

I have seen custom made ones in the past. The problem is finding lumber large enough to do so.

Custom only really. Its not going to do anything a neck-through wouldn't do......so even from that initial perspective it would be a bad idea.
In addition to the stupidly expensive wood (reason #2) it could (read: would) have all sorts of warp issues (reason #3 and by far the most important) due to grain/blank size that would combine to make it plainly silly for any company to take on from a commercial perspective.

That's not what he's talking about. More like this:

But yeah, that's only remotely practical for tiny bodies, like a Steinberger paddle or so.

Re: Is there such thing...

Seen someone selling an unpainted/unfinished one on ebay many many years ago. Alex
makes a number of good points. I was interested in it conceptually, a couple years ago, but lost interest after realizing most of my fav sounding guitars are bolt on

It does strike me as the type of thing a real cocky player would use to say "you can't get my tone without this really expensive thing".

Re: Is there such thing...

I saw a video where some French company carved an entire guitar out of a single block of wood

Velo
Or some such
Around 10 grand each

The case was made out of the remnants of the CNC carving

I concur.

Laminated necks rule, they rule even more in neck-through-body designs.

I saw one guitar that retailed for $60,000 that was made of one-piece old-growth wood. Some people thought it looked ugly but I really liked the design of it. I forget what the brand was called now but here's a couple of pictures.

Re: Is there such thing...

ive thought about it and i think it could easily be done but if it was me i would add some carbon rods. Although the risk is high with warping it might just be the matter of choosing the right bit of wood and support.
