is this a good metal guitar recording ..?

Re: is this a good metal guitar recording ..?

the lead sound is fine, although it's drenched with entirely too much reverb. The rhythms sound a bit stiff in the midrange, and I kinda wish there was more oomph in the lows/low-mids.

Re: is this a good metal guitar recording ..?

Too much reverb for my liking, you could also do with a little less treble and more mids and a little more bass in the rhythm part, it's a little scratchy sounding. The lead stuff is fine, but you could play around with dynamics and balance a bit to make it more pronounced, as the lead guitar should be a little bit louder than the rhythm, not the other way around. But that's just my opinion, hope this was useful. Fiddle around a bit and post a load of these, with details of what you've changed, and people can choose what the best one is. And voila! You've just gained a great sound over a good one!

Re: is this a good metal guitar recording ..?

thanks..this stuff is hard...and mixing is just as hard...
I do like verb on lead..and there is no verb on the rhythm...alot of rhythm gods have crappy lead tones..its very hard to nail both..

Re: is this a good metal guitar recording ..?

Sounds good to me. I don't think I'd be able to tell it wasn't a speaker in a typical cab - maybe the klops magic is more pronounced in the room?

There was no mud or phase in the guitar so you can hear all the strings...I think I just need to add bass guitar...

Re: is this a good metal guitar recording ..?

Rhythm guitar doesn't really have much context without bass and drums.

Agreed.

Let's here it in a mix! A bass will take care of any 'lacking' low end, drums will fill out its respective place etc.

I agree...I think the bass is whats missing..both the tones from both guitars excluding the verb on the lead..is pretty close...as for the reverb..it may have been to wett..but with bass guitar I may have used less..

Re: is this a good metal guitar recording ..?

Don't know till you try...get some bass on their!

Keep in mind you can highpass your reverb too to get rid of the low end buildup.

Yeah...I am looking for a bass now..then try some better mixing..I think I can use less verb when the bass is added..

Re: is this a good metal guitar recording ..?

the sound capture seems pretty good, honestly. Its just a matter of mixing after that point. There's also the fact that we're hearing these without the context of an overall track. The sound is "right" when its what you think is awesome--thats always my philosophy

I dunno - I always like it on metal albums when all stops and rhythm plays by itself. Usually that tells me if I like the guitar tone or if it was a combo of the bass & guitar I was actually hearing.

so I did capture rhythm guitar correctly ?

I mean..I should not have to add bass, cause you guys hear guitar all the time without bass until bass is added!!!

I hear rhythm clips all the time without bass..thats how you can hear the clarity of guitar!

I like it. The eqing leaves plenty of room for the bass and drums. Nice clear note definition and a sweet tone.

wow..thanks..

No Mud..No Phase..and the punch on the guitar is there!!
I can even go higher on the gain..

well like I said its as correct as YOU think it is. Personally I think its a good tone that will work in a mix. Its not remotely how I like MY guitar to sound, but I think if you had a moment where the rhythm guitar had a moment all to itself like Dank mentioned it would not register as anything negative to the listener. Sounds like that is how it is supposed to be
Edit: Listened without headphones this time and it is kind of getting lost in the low end. Maybe play more with mic position/highpass/EQ to get some more presence--but its really hard to tell with that lead guitar all over it

Me too, but he did have a solo over it.

The intro to Body Hammer by Fear Factory was my benchmark for this for our earlier stuff. If it sounded that big on it's own it was right on the money :D.
