is this a real SD 59?

Hi
I'm new here so hello to you all .
Let me start by saying I have had alot of guitars and changed alot of pickups from alot of different pickup makers.

I bought this pup used from someone who says he took it out of a brand new charvel . The problem I have with it is that of all the pickups I have bought in my life I have never got one from any manufacturer that has the tape wrapped on the frame and I have never seen one that has one end of the magnet exposed . Maybe this is common on pickups that are sent to guitar shops I don't know . I first thought someone had changed the magnet but the seller swears it is just like it was when he took it out of a brand new charvel
Just thought I would ask here to see what you guys thought .

Thanks in advance

Re: is this a real SD 59?

I have a '59 neck that came in an Indonesian Fender that looks almost identical, aside from being black in color, having coil tape that covers the full height of the pickup, and having different codes on the label (IOQWF 20131121 SH1N.RP NECK). I'd say it's authentic, but it appears a previous owner pulled the original tape away to perform a magnet swap. The DC resistance is consistent with a '59 neck model, so the bobbins are probably original. Maybe they put an A2 or something in there.

Re: is this a real SD 59?

I think its just a DIY short leg converted sh1n.

Look at the screws.
Its clear that some one did some thing to it.
Oval hole double row baseplate from a 4 conductor jazz or something.

Tape is strange to.
And the tape End cut does not match factory cut.

Black marking on the magnet ?

Re: is this a real SD 59?

It definitely doesn't look original, but big deal. The tape doesn't make it sound any different. As far as the short-legged baseplate is concerned, I would have done that mod anyway. And the mag can now be easily swapped without having to unwrap then re-wrap the tape...another plus.

It does appear to be a 59n so the big concern, as I see it, is if you paid premium price for a stock, non-modded pup. If so, you should contact the seller and get half your money returned.

Re: is this a real SD 59?

Its probably a OEM for Charvel. It could be ordered from SD as Charvel like it ... Shortlegged, without tape ...

They can order with short legs. They can't order it without tape.

The pickup looks authentic (at least from the underside) but possibly re-taped at some point. Do the bobbins have the "square-in-circle" tooling marks? If so, it's almost certainly an SD.

I have a stock "Vintage Blues" set (SH-1n and SH-1b) dated only a month different than the OP's and both pickups look just like his without the traditional acetate tape on the bobbins. They have the "square in circle" marks and everything. I had seen the same "no tape" thing with a couple sets of Slash pickups, even ones made late last year, so I thought it must be the way SD is doing some of the models now.

I have to admit, when I encountered it on the '59 set, I wondered if that was normal. Now someone else is asking the same thing...

Maybe a particular person winding them does it this way? It would be interesting to know

I believe the '59 does not have the acetate tape because it's considered a vintage pickup and thereby has vintage appointments. Same with the Slash pickup.

I think you're right...

Same production date as OP's pickup, no tape, also claims to be from a Charvel:

Another "new" one, no tape:
