Is this an XL? Modding my Woody.

exnihilo

MEGAINFRACTOR!
It's probably 20 years old-ish now. No other marks or writing. Anyhow, I want to cut the cord to about 6" and make it a female connection instead. There seems to be only two conductors running through the cable, so I figure it's an easy mod. What say you all?

It doesn't look like an XL. Just a standard Woody. The XL has adjustable pole pieces.

I still have the same 3 I've had for years, from my first order when I was a dealer. Let's just call them a slow seller.

I can vaguely remember installing one in a customers guitar. IIRC, it sounded pretty good, but had a big ole cord hanging off the sound hole. I think he upgraded to a UST not much later.

What's a UST?

Here's the result, going from an outie to an innie. :D

**I did use shrink tube on both sides but had to take it apart multiple times for adjustments, so eventually, I just used some quality electric tape on the one end I was abusing.**

You used to see a few people at every open mike with SD's Woody or a Dean Markley Pro-Mag. Now, so many acoustics come with pickups, even very cheap ones, that you don't see them at all. Super expensive acoustics may or may not include USTs, but if it doesn't, they generally don't use pop-in pickups, they use microphones.

The UST's are fine when they work right and are set up properly. But when they go bad, they can be a nightmare. They'll start to hum horribly while still putting out signal. So you start looking for problems with the preamp or wiring. It's taken me fixing a few to make me look at the UST first when I have an acoustic hum problem. I much prefer the "Hotspot" style piezo. It's too bad the Duncan-Turner (DTAR) collaboration fell apart. It's partly why I became a K&K dealer.

I'd also love to get a Solstice preamp. The styling on that was awful though. It would have been killer in a 1U rack unit.

Use what you've got!

Now I need a way of securing the sleeving (rainbow-colored deal in my pic) to the face of the guitar without damaging the guitar. I'm not super worried about it, but it would be nice if it were removable with little damage to the finish. 3M strips look like a solid contender.

They have those things that they advertise on TV all the time that will hold a picture up, but peel off without leaving anything behind. My wife buys them every Christmas, but I can't remember what they're called.

Edit: My wife says "Command Strips."

I would just run it to an end jack.

Yes sir!

I would just run it to an end jack.

What's that? Like wire it up from the inside to a real external jack?

like replace the strap pin on the bottom of the guitar with a jack but thats a more permanent install

Yes, you just replace the strap pin with an output jack. If the guitar isn't expensive I would do that but it's more permanent.

I wonder how difficult it would be to make a Bluetooth Woody? Would definitely bring it into the 21st century. :dunno:
