Is this factory and if so...why?

Every charvel I have had has been from the 80s until I picked up this Mexican built San dimas the other week. Why would the pickup rings be angled on a flat top guitar like this? Is this someone hackery or is there a reason for this? Every other guitar I have ever owned the pickup run parallel to the strings. Mot at a weird angle like this. The pickup rings on my LP are angled like this. But that's so the pickups are parallel to the strings.......so factory? Or do I need pickup rings? I dont really know how much it will affect the tone but if nothing else it looks stupid as hell.

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

i can only guess the factory action would be higher also, is that floyd full floating or just down pull, does it have rout or is top mount?, if it's to mount then it came out of the factory as a full floating top mount floyd and so the bridge would be way above the body to allow pull up hence the need for a slanted ring as the angle on which the strings run isn't parallel to the body but the same 5° as every tune-o-matic bridge

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

Floyd is recessed and full floating. You cant even see how the action is set so I dont see how you can say the action would have been higher.

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

Red pickup probably not factory, somebody went with the rings that came in the box without giving it any thought?

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

Red pickup is a jb and it wouldn't have come with a pickup ring.

Btw. Neck pickup ring is also angled but shorter.

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

People sometimes buy pickups and throw in an order of rings... or sell used pickups with rings.

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

Right. Thsts what I'm trying to conclude....if someone did this or if this is how it came.

Anyone have a Mexican made charvel 1 hh for comparison?

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

I bet both rings are aftermarket. I also bet if you removed a pickup, you'd see holes in the cavity from where the originals were direct mounted.

I've had the pickups out....no holes. Some of the mid 2000's came with pickup rings. I would rather them be direct mount but now there would be holes all over it.

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

This is only a problem if you are exceptionally OCD (like I am). It won't affect the sound at all and you are the only one who will see it, or be affected by it in any way.

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

The potential advantage is more of the pickup is covered, which might help prevent the high E getting caught on the edge of the neck pickup. See the tape on Steve Vai and Dimebag Darrell’s guitars if you’re not familiar with this problem.

I literally cant stop staring at it. lol I ordered some flat pickup rings

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

You don’t need pickup rings with a pickguard. Looks like someone added those.

Kramer did it like this (slanted Schaller rings), so I wouldn't consider it out of question that Charvel did the same.

Re: Is this factory and if so...why?

Guessing here, is it because the neck pocket has an angle to it. I have an '87 M1 but it is not here at the moment or I would check mine as it is 100% stock.
