Is this normal sounding?

I installed a JB in my Ibganez RG2820. It is mahogany w/ maple top, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard.

I noticed on certain frets, especially on E and B string, the notes sound very warbly. I tried changing pickup height, bridge height and everything else I can think of. Nothing gets rid of it. The pickup is great sounding other than the warbliness. I am not even sure if it did it with the previous pickups.

Anyway, here is a link to an mp3 of the sound I am talking about:

Any advice is appreciated. The first hit of the note (11th fret, E string) is with JB. Second is with Jazz Neck.

If I just listen to the note acoustically, I do not hear the warbling. None of my other guitars do this as far as I can tell.

thanks,

brian

Re: Is this normal sounding?

Sounds like you got some weird harmonic-intonation crap goin' on....

Re: Is this normal sounding?

I am suspicious of the amp.

Re: Is this normal sounding?

If your action is too low the sound you're hearing is the string brushing the successive frets.

I get the same sound sometimes, and I usually find the action causes it.

Re: Is this normal sounding?

Move your pickups away from the strings a bit and try again. One of my strats did this when all 3 pickups were too close.

Re: Is this normal sounding?

I tried raising the action and lowering the pickups. It did not make the sound go away.

I hope it is not an amp problem - it is a Diezel Einstein which is a pretty solid amp. And the guitar is a pretty good quality Ibanzez Prestige RG 2820.

thanks,

Re: Is this normal sounding?

It also could be a twisted string. When the string was installed, it could have had a bit of twist to it, and that will sometimes cause some funky sounds.

Re: Is this normal sounding?

Something's vibrating very close to the pitch of that particular note, it's called sympathetic (sp?) vibration. it could be the springs, if you've got a vibrato system, or something like a screw not tight enough... it could be many things; only your ear can help in finding the culprit. Good luck with the hunt!

That's another good thing to check. I have heard of some people putting foam under the springs to dampen them.

Re: Is this normal sounding?

I will change the strings, put dampening material under the strings and report back!

+1....or you could try moving your pickup down. The strings could just be hitting the screws in those spots; I had the same problem in my LP

Re: Is this normal sounding?

I changed strings and seems the problem went away.

Any of you notice that harmonics seem more mellow with new strings? The new strings feel so slick it is as if that slickness translates to harmonics. Before the string change, the harmonics were more biting.

Re: Is this normal sounding?

Well, you either went from reinforced plain steel to reinforced plain steel or from something like Slinky 9s to Blue Steels. So, if you put on a new set of the old strings, chances are you didn't change anything regarding material.

However, did the strings require changing? Were they gunky? A week old? A day old?

Are you using squareish strings like D'Adarrios or more rounded ones like Ernie Ball? If they're squarish, you probably had one twisted at just the right angle to graze the succeeding frets, thus causing the warble.

Re: Is this normal sounding?

THe new strings are D-Addario 9.5-44. Fairly unique gauge. The previous ones were either D'Addarrio or Ernie Ball, I think...

The strings were on the border as far as needing to bhe changed. I have corrosive sweat and so they were starting to feel a little rough.
