His name is Bach to rock. I talked to him on the phone and he is a nice guy. I am thinking of ordering one of his pickups as well.

I seem to like the 59b the best, but the holmes and voodoo were pretty good as well.

How about anyone making a JB/Custom?
Swineshead intended to do one but last I heard from them, they had problems with noise rejection- I could really, really use this combo if anyone is winding it-

There is one on the Trading Post. At least there was... I looked into it but decided not to buy it. Do a search over there. I forget the person selling it, but they were cool.

You have to buy 2 pickups, one a custom and one a 59, then you take em apart and put the coil from one on the other. But it leaves you with enough parts to build another pup right? do you rebuild the custom with the 59 coil? and how does that sound? Since its using the custom mag whats the difference?

You can make two hybrid pickups. One will have a stronger screw coil, the other a stronger slug coil.

Or you can make one double-screw pickup and one double-slug (but both will have one coil stronger than the other).

The differences are:

1) An 11.2k pickup as opposed to 8.1 or 14.2, which will sound very different from either.

2) Mismatched coils (4.1k + 7.1k) give you a stronger emphasis on the frequencies the stronger (7.1k) coil sits under. I recommend that the screw coil be the stronger one because it sits closer to the bridge -- and will therefore emphasize the treble more and keep some of the vintage sparkle to balance the increased mids (relative to the 59) of the 11.2k overall resistance. The mismatch in general gives you a slightly more single-coilish tone because of one coil being dominant.

Trust us, the hybrid is a very different animal and well worth trying out.

As for the magnet, you don't have to use the Custom (ceramic) mag if you don't want to. You can use the Alnico 5 from the 59. Or Alnico 2, 3, or 4 if you have them laying around like I do.

Or Alnico 8 -- Wicked Lester loves it, and I've got an order of them coming in next month. Will be interesting to hear how Alnico 8 sounds in my custom-made hybrid.

That is why the Custom/59 Hybrid is my favorite... it is the perfect blend of the open/articulate/transparent vintage tone of the 59 and the creamy/lush tone of the Custom Custom.

I have been using the The C/59 Hybrid for 25 years now and every once in a while I will throw a 59, Custom Custom, JB and an EVH in an axe to re-evaluate.

The JB and Custom Custom are just too compressed sounding for me and the 59 lacks a certain "strength" that I look for in tone. The EVH gets that strength being an overwind of the 59, but it loses the tranparency.

I think it is safe to say that each wire type and guage has it's magical zone of turns on a coil to achieve an optimal balance of tone, response and output.

The Hybrid uses one 42 guage vintage wind 59 coil (4.15k) and one 43 guage Custom coil (7.2k) combined to make what I consider the perfect bridge pickup (11.25k) for a vintage with balls tone. Plus, the output and tone balances perfectly with a vintage neck pickup.

The tone is on par with my other favorite Bridge pickup... the PHAT CAT!"

TO ELABORATE:

I think I should rename the thing ALNICO 59/CUSTOM HYBRID for clarification...
This pickup prefers ALNICO so you will want to use a 59 and a Custom Custom or Custom 5 to make them. You can fine tune it just like a Custom or 59 wind with either Alnico 2 or 5. I think most player prefer the A5 of the ones I have made for Forum members.

Yes, the Custom/JB is a very cool Hybrid and works well with both ALNICO 5 and the this CERAMIC magnet from a regular Custom... it yeilds an articulate and crunchy tone with the signature mids of the JB and the nice bass and treble of the Custom or Custom 5... a great modern tone, not vintage with balls like the ALNICO 59/CUSTOM HYBRID... A2 magnets sound too mushy in custom/JB Hybrid.

had 4 at one time, 2 double blacks and 2 zebras ....... sold a black one and am keeping the rest.....have them in a LP studio, SG and a Epi Dot....great pups !
