The first thing you want to do is get some Auralex studio foam and line the inside of the lower chamber; it will GREATLY reduce leakage and really tighten up the sound of the cabinet when you record.

Cool.. how do you get it into the lower compartment? I don't see any access points to enter the lower part outside the little "port" hole near the speaker. I even tossed around adding another "mic" inside but didn't know where to run the cable... =)

You remove the speaker to install the foam in the bottom. Use as much as you can but still leave a little room for the speaker to dispense with any heat it might build up. The additional acoustic treatment really helps with standing waves inside the box that cause the boxiness in the sound. It does not eliminate it, but it helps

I've added a Randall IsoCab to my studio recently and have begun "testing" tones with it for my CD project that I will start tracking next month (once I get my pickups from MJ installed =).

I have an SM57 and set it up with a gooseneck.. and have a decent sound.. but it has that boxiness... has anyone had good results with the Randall box and OTHER mics?? I'm looking for a heavy rock sound with power and girth.. I don't want buzziness or fizziness. Think "AUNCH" plus old Yngwie.. plus some good modern heaviness (but still clear.. no mush). =)

The best tone I ever got with the Randall was with an e609 located on the outside edge of the speaker. I had to get some additional extenders/bars etc to get the mic positioned there so be prepared to experiment with it. Generally speaking with any ISO cab I prefer hyper cardoid mics placed as close to the speaker as possible. Hyper Cardoids do a better job of NOT picking up the resonance of the cab itself. By placing the mic as close as possible the ratio of speaker sound to cab resonance goes up even more.

This is my video. Homemade thing. It works for me. It can still get loud, and the bass will permeate. I think it cuts the sound down 50-60%. But I bet if you add more cushion for the pushin' it'll work. Also I use a Weber Mini Mass.
