Issue with a volume pot..

I'm using this diagram
http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=1h_2s_1v_1t_5w_pp

And instead of wiring the tone pot like that diagram I decided to run the cap from the tone pot to the volume pot like this:

wiringModern.jpg

Anyways. everything works. The push/pull etc.. however the volume doesnt. It stays on "10" basically.. When I turn to 0 I do hear a slightly lower volume, but definitely not muted like you'd expect on 0.

Is it a bad pot? Or have I messed up wiring it somewhere?

Thanks in advance..

It figures that the one guitar that I have to unstring and remove the pickguard to do any wiring would be the one to give me troubles.. Wired a LP and SG with no problems.. lol :(

Re: Issue with a volume pot..

Wiring the tone control à la Gibson should make zero difference.

Volume pots act by directing unwanted signal to ground. Likeliest cause of failure is a poor connection to ground. Second likeliest is a damaged or interrupted resistance track inside the pot. Overheating can cause this. So could yanking up too forcibly on the plastic control knob.

NOTE: Photographs of your actual wiring would help far more than the diagrams from which you worked.

Re: Issue with a volume pot..

I'm going to tear back into the guitar tomorrow. I'll snap a pic of it then and check the grounding lug on the volume pot. I went over every connection in my head, and thus far thats the only one I'm concerned about. For some odd reason I was thinking that if the volume pot wasn't properly grounded on the lug, it would either be silent or really noisy like other grounding issues...

Re: Issue with a volume pot..

No, volumes are a pass component. Unless there is some signal shunted to ground then it will pass the full signal.

Re: Issue with a volume pot..

That's what it was. Didn't have the ground lug on the volume pot soldered good enough.. just a dab more of solder and it works fine.. thanks for the suggestions!
