It really is a little silly how much I like my SG

It's certainly nothing fancy, a Faded Special with a '59 set in it. I got to pick it out from nearly all of the ones they had in stock at Guitar Center, which in the case of the one in Kendall, FL., was a nice place to shop until the Corporate Weasels bought them out. I knew it was mine when I picked it up. It's showing it's age and use - I play it every day - and that adds to the character.

The neck is a little smaller than the others I tried and I have short fingers. It fits just right. It sounds good with 9's, 10's, 11's, even 12's when I tried them all - top wrapped 10-52's are what I settled on.

The design is just so right. Simplicity. I say it's even more simple and pure than a Tele. I know, them's fightin' words in some parts. Still, I stick to it. A body and a neck glued together, 2 pickups that's it. And it is beautiful to boot.

No needless froo froo or an expensive finish to worry about. Nothing fancy, just a light, super resonant guitar with a comfortable neck and easy on the eyes.

Anyone else feel really attached to one particular axe?

There's nothing 'silly' about liking an SG a lot. They're one of the world's great guitar designs. Sleek, sexy, and an endless neck. And the fact that you prefer it over a Tele shows that you're a smart man with good taste. Be proud and hold your head high!

a big "amen" to all these posts. SGs are sexy sexy beasts. no matter which model.

Re: It really is a little silly how much I like my SG

Not silly at all- SGs rock :bigthumb: Over the years, I've come to prefer them over Les Pauls in the grand scheme of things.

Re: It really is a little silly how much I like my SG

Nothing wrong with this at all! Glad you have an axe you are so bonded with!

It makes a big diff when you can play a bunch of one model and pick the one that feels the best.. Most stores anymore dont have that many to do this with.. And buying on line doesnt afford you the chance to do this.

I was able to do this with my Squier Strat when I was getting back into playing after 11 years without. I picked the most resonant one and it really is a cut above.

Got to play a '61 SG/LP, an '89 SGX, an '78 Ibanez 6/12 SG, and a White SG Custom the other night along with a Seymour Duncan DejaVu pedal at a good friend's house Saturday night. The double neck was freakin' incredible!!! Life IS Good! :friday: :cool2: :approve:

Enjoy your SG. Might have to get something in that line someday. One of those SG P90 guitars from the GOTW deal would be sweet. :scratchch

Are you saying the Kendall Guitar Center Closed?

I had one of those faded SGs for a few weeks and played it live later, when it belonged to a friend. it broke. twice. :lmao:

Re: It really is a little silly how much I like my SG

If you found a guitar you truely love then I am happy for you.Finding one you truely adore is a tough feat.
Now don't ever sell or trade it.
I built a strat a few years ago 74 Neck on a MIJ 72 RI body w/ Custom Shop 69' pups.I reliced the finish by setting the body on fire over the stove:eyecrazy:which really improved the resonance as the finish as well as the sealer were gone.
I decided later that I would build a "better" strat selling that one for funds.Well the next strat while worth more as it was more original 70s was a dog,I sold that one to build another and this new one rocks but evan then it still don't have the crazy mojo the burned up relic had,the neck(also a 74 like the first strat) is a little flatter and just not as comfortable feeling.
So after many years of buying, selling, butchering, modding, part swapping guitars.I realize that if you get a guitar you love NEVER sell or trade it,play it till it wears out then refret it.Don't replace the neck allways repair the original parts that were on it when you loved it or it won't be the same.
Well back on subject I've been GASSING for a SG classic w/ the P90s something so cool about a fullface guard w/ P90s in an SG.

Re: It really is a little silly how much I like my SG

Thanks for the replies. This experience is why I can't imagine buying a guitar online without the ability to feel the mojo first. It was a real Goldilocks moment when I found this SG.

Astro, I didn't mean that the Kendall GC closed, I mean that once the company was bought out by their current Corporate Weasel ownership the attitudes changed. Whereas I used to be treated much like I would have at a small shop where I knew the people and got treated like the good steady customer I am suddenly everything was about corporate policy and rules. It really screwed up the attitudes of people there.

D-Sam, I intend never to sell it. I did that once many years ago. I sold a '66 Strat to make rent back in '82. I didn't get back into music until 2001.

That's awesome --- I would love to get a good SG like you have

and big x2 to Empty Pockets

Re: It really is a little silly how much I like my SG

This is one guitar I do not have and wish I did. But crap...I hardly play the 15 guitars I own right now.

And you won't put a lot of wear on any one of them in particular, and will save yourself an expensive fret job. Rotate 'em, baby! Keep it interesting. Even if you just have a bunch of SG's (nothing wrong with that).

Re: It really is a little silly how much I like my SG

I took a Jackson RR3 to bed one night....

Amen!! SG's are a great axe, kind of like the Swiss Army Knife of guitars, love 'em!
