It's been almost three weeks, SDUGF wouldn't be complete without...

Haters gonna hate, but at least I use this stuff to make money =D

A friend of mine asked for dibs on my Black Arts Pharaoh, so I figured I needed another fuzz to replace it. I got myself a Mojo Hand Colossus and it came in the mail yesterday.

I got to use it for an hour or so during our pre-gig warm up, and I was so impressed with it that I decided to give it a trial by fire, so to speak. Out of an 18 song set, I used it on at least 11 songs (could be more but I'm not 100% sure, that's the magic of unlimited free drinks). It preformed incredibly. I used it as a super fuzzy beast of a tone for our originals, but I also used it for Hendrix's Spanish Castle Magic with the gain down and the mids up, going into my Weehbo JMP drive. It sounded so damn good that for a minute there I wanted to get rid of my Sunface. Seriously, that good. It also has a great volume knob clean up - I used it set the same way as I did for Hendrix but without the JMP drive for an Allman Bros cover, and I could get beautifully thick and rich slightly broken up tones with the volume around 3-4 on my geet, with more sustain and compression higher on the volume.

I know that I've been buying a hell of a lot of pedals lately, but this is easily one of the best I've tried since I got my Tri/Ram from Basic Audio late last year. Just an all around incredibly versatile, incredible sounding muff. Hopefully I'll have some videos up of our gig from last night within the next week or two.

Damn. Now im pedal gassing. You prefer it to the pharaoh AND the ram? I like the idea of as much mids as you want. Muffs are way scoopy. Better than your sunface too? I going to have to check one out.

I wouldn't say that it's better than the Tri/Ram, just different (and part of it may have been having something new and shiny on my board). This is my first foray into the Russian Muff vein, and so far I love it. You can get traditional muff sounds with the mids knob around 9, cut-thru-the-mix muff tones bumping it up to 11-12, and 3 and beyond gets into distortion territory. The gain range is one of the elements that makes it much more versatile than the Tri/Ram. The Colossus actually does lo-gain well, whereas the Tri/Ram even at minimum distortion is pretty saturated.

As for being better than the Sunface, no. But it sounded a bit similar at certain settings, or at least within the ballpark, and that REALLY impressed me.

Better than the Pharaoh? Without a doubt.

Have you ever tried the Iron Bell at all? I seem to recall liking a demo of that a while back, but wondered if you'd managed any hands on comparison.

Mojo Hand is killing it with their dirt pedals. I have a Rook on my board that booted the FD2 I'd been using for years. I tried an Iron Bell, and it sounded pretty great. I don't know that I'd ever have use for that much gain, but Big Muff users should definitely look at that one.

I haven't tried the Iron Bell. It seems like a great pedal though, and if I was in a PF cover band I'd look at getting it right quick if I didn't have the Colossus already.

And here's ye olde pedalboarde shot:

I'm planning on getting an EP booster to trade out with the Timmy (still keeping that though, it's fantastic but I'd like another flavor) and then the last pedal will be a Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian. Then, my Big Muff Trifecta will be complete.

Turn everything on at the same time all full and just walk off stage and grab a drink and say 'thankyou'.

Re: It's been almost three weeks, SDUGF wouldn't be complete without...

If I did not already get the Wren And Cuff Tall Font Russian I would get the Iron Bell... to be honest the Wren And Cuff sounds great stacked with my SFT but on its own it just feels a little stiff and almost fizzy with the tone rolled down but tooooo thin and buzzy with the tone past a quarter of the knob range... its not jumping out at me as a pedal worth what I paid (220 with tax and shipping)

Well part of that is just the nature of replicas of old school big muffs. I had an exact replica of the idealized Ram's Head (Stomp Under Foot Violet Ram's Head, fyi) and the pedal didn't sound good if the tone was under 11 or over 1. Have you used any old (or replicas of old) big muffs before? They can be tricky to get what you want from them. That's part of why I went for the Tri/Ram and the Colossus. They're tweaked to be extremely versatile and sound excellent on their own. All of the distortion tones (except for a minute and a half where my Sunface guest starred) on my band's album are the Tri/Ram muff into my 68 Bassman run at about 5 on the volume. You can listen to it via the soundcloud link in my sig, I think you'll dig it as a fellow stoner doom fan.

I'm also curious as to where you paid $220 for the pedal. You can get them online with free shipping and no tax for $190. But anyway, if after a while you find that the W&C just isn't working out for you, let me know and I'll give you a good deal on it.

I got it at Moog Audio here in Canada. I was using a Little Big Muff before so maybe this Russian clone is just a totally different beast and needs time to be tweaked just right but it oddly enough sounds really good with the tone near 0 the level 3 quarters and the sustain 3 quarters up with the SFT ... instant sputtery mayhem! but If I decide to sell I will PM you and just pick up another Little Big Muff. Thanks!

That pedalboard is just... holy **** man. Congratulations!

I have listened to a few of the Mojo Hand pedal demos, and one of the dudes over at the GAB forum demoed a few and they sounded KILLER. The Rook is by far the best stand-alone OD I have heard a demo of. The other pedals that sounded really nice were the Mr. Black pedals. Really nice chorus, reverb and phaser.

I just really like pedals with shiny silver buttons that make a "click" noise when stepped on.

I like your fuzzy tunes. Make me feel fuzzy, too.
