Remember that that is an asking price only, and remember that there has been a lot of inflation since 1998.

I'd say that they have pretty much held their value, but not that they would have been a "good investment" vs. any number of other ways one could invest his or her money. In other words, if you had bought one back then, and you sold it now, you wouldn't be losing your ass, and you wouldn't be much ahead either (if any).
