I've finally joined the 4x12 club!

So I've had the Traynor YCS50 for well over a year now. Last year I found an empty 4x12 (an old PA cab, sealed-back, front load only) for $30. I waited, and waited, and then found a pair of used speakers for $180 (a Weber blue dog and Celestion G12-65). After I had them installed, I ordered two Eminence Legend 1218 speakers to complete it. Played it at a gig last night and it sounded great! It's also a bit lighter than my bandmate's Randall RX 4x12.

Edit: the grill covers are metal, not plastic.

Here it is:

Nice bit of recycling there. D'you know that even after some 30+ years of having a guitar of one kind or another around the house, I have still never played through a 4x12".

I haven't been playing that long but have never played through a 4x12 neither. Only 1x12s and 2x12s. I guess I'd rather have easy mobility over being able to move more air.

I don't like to have to bend over to see the knobs. I usually put a four space rack between the head and 4x12. I also have a 2x12 for situations where the larger cab may not work as well, but they take up roughly the same floor space.

I've never had a 4x12 either but I've used a few, from crappy cheap Marshall MG and Randall cabs to a Triple Rec cab which was just amazing.
Such a deep, huge sound on that one.

I feel you. Do I want back ache from hauling four-twelves (which can be compensated by arm-strength push-ups, chin-ups and weight lifting) or from leaning over to adjust amp settings. It's not like I need a reason to work out!

To all those who have never played through a 4x12: I still salute you. It's how hard YOU rock, not how many speakers amplifying you rocking. I recognize that I heed the advice of Empty_Pockets. Furthermore, I am a fiend for fat guitar tones & loud rock n roll.

Re: I've finally joined the 4x12 club!

If you're a fiend for fat guitar tones and rock'n'roll, the 412 is your best friend, no matter which amp you feed into it.

And that Traynor amp in the middle of the pic. That thing looks cool. I know nothing about Traynors.
What year is it?

I love that set up. If I walked into a club and you were playing through that I would think :33: funky and cool. I love it when guitarist steps out of the Fender Twin/JMC800 norm in search of new tone.

The Traynor YCS-50 is a relatively new model released 5 or 6 years ago. Mine was made in 2011. My bandmate has the same amp except he has the head version. The combo comes stock with 6L6 and the head with EL34 tubes, but either tube type can be used in the head and combo. The old PA cab I used is a Traynor from 1972. I don't own the Blues Jr. and the old Traynor cab on the left, but I do own the bass rig on the right.

Here's a live video from April with two YCS 50s going (mine is clean, my bandmate's is overdriven).

It's funny you say that, because I bought this amp because I felt the clean channel aped the Fender tone and the OD channel has more of a Marshall tone. It also was just under $1,000 after tax, so much cheaper than either a Fender Twin or Marshall JVM.

You don't know what you've been missing! The authority that comes with a 4x12 is something you should really experience. My confidence and inspiration soared after 2 events in my early playing life: the first time I bought a tube amp and the first time I paired it with a 4x12. :D

For many years I had only a 4x12, although I later bought a 2x12 cab and later a 1x12 combo for quick jams. For a time, I even had two 4x12s in stereo, but during the beginning of recession (which we are still in :oo ), I figured that was excessive at the time, so I trimmed down only to my beloved Mesa Mark Series 4x12. I've have to lose 40 lbs via starvation before I parted with it. My dream is to one day have a 2nd one with the identical (factory) speakers, which are rather expensive, so no rush.

Nice rig MkIII Renegade!

There's something to be said for the tonal complexity that rises out of mixing speakers in a 4x12. There's three different speakers in mine: 2x Eminence Legend 1218 1x Weber Blue Dog 1x Celestion G12-65 and the result is harmonically richer than the single Vintage 30 in the combo.
