I've finaly got a Les Paul. And now?

Re: I've finaly got a Les Paul. And now?

There is nothing better than a set of PGs for a dark Les Paul.

It all depends on the tone you're going for. For a fat, mellow sound, PGN's are ideal. If you like bright, clear neck PU's with some edge (like me), PGN's are probably going to be too warm and rounded. They're one of the last PU's I'd put in a dark LP. I've got a number of PAF's that are better in the neck slot of a dark LP.

Don't forget that the amp and pedals are a big part of the tone equation too.

Re: I've finaly got a Les Paul. And now?

I would not suggest 500k pots for the PGs. This will make the bridge pup way to bright. Of course if your LP is still dark after you install a PGb, then go to 500k pots.

That kind of statement kind of scaries me and that's exactly my cons against this set. It seems like it can get too harsh and piercing.

That's a strange thing. I trust experience, but for what I've seen, they seems bright, and so woul brighten up a dark guitar. No?

Your rig probably illuminates a whole room with the amount of brightness one would think you prefer.

You might want to temper your posting velocity. I guarantee within 4 years you will be embarrassed by quite a number of these posts and wish you could delete them, but can't even find them all to do so.

According to my superhuman perception you sound like you've got something against me.

PG's are a contrasting set: dark, fat neck with a bright, thin bridge. Some players really like that. For me, it's too hard to dial in an amp's EQ's when the PU's are so different in EQ.

Not really. I like warm bridge PU's with a lot of mids (they hit harder), and bright neck PU's with a sharp edge for clarity and bite.

Slash set -> Les Paul -> Carl Martin PlexiTone-> Marshall 1987 plexi. It doesn't get anymore classic rock setup than that. And I don't play like Slash. They are just great all around pickups.

Re: I've finaly got a Les Paul. And now?

PG's are not the kind of bright that the treble knob on the amp can't calm. The bridge is a little thin, and EQ doesn't really fix that, but if it wasn't a little thin sounding, they wouldn't be Pearly Gates, they'd be another generic, overly thick rock humbucker.

Let's get down to details.
What is so embarassing about specific statements?

You should create a new screen name and not post your age this time.

It is not age. It is lack of maturity in comments. It would come across rapidly. It is about attitude and maturity in posting. Honestly, finding out he is a fifteen year old kid actually makes me more tolerant than thinking he was my age. It actually encourages me to let some of the attitude and immaturity slide. But I am far more apt to let stuff slide from a 15 year old who is not a mature adult. Why the heck would I expect him to act older than he is?

And one thing about growing older I have noticed is I do cringe a lot when I look back at myself. I think we all will, as we all are hopefully far more mature than we were 10 years ago.

I don't know, I'm thinking my Les Paul > SuperDistortion > Marshall is pretty classic….

See - and that says to me he digs an A2 mag in the bridge and an A5 in the neck. In the right Les Paul, I'd say a 59/A2P combo would be the cat's meow for Blueman.

And I see what people are saying about a "thin" sound on the bridge with a PG. But - there is a sort of slightly single coil quality about that you may dig. Again - ALL PG's have a slick/sweet/fat sort of top because of the A2 magnet. The cut/slice/bright comes from an upper mid spike. Emphasis on the RIGHT LP. In a dark/muddy one, he wouldn't dig the bridge. In really bright one, the neck would be weird. But in the right one…..

The 59, in contrast to the PG, has no spike, but has a sharp edge to the treble that may not cut through the mix as well, but is distinctly brighter on the top than a PG, but not brighter overall because of generally les miss.

All of that….IMO.

I could tell he was under 18 when he first posted, by virtue of his vocabulary, but I would much rather have kept guessing and judge the posts in isolation, rather than know more than I need to know about the source of those words, and have that temptation to criticize something said with a low-effort, catch-all pejorative term like "immature".

As we age, we tend to forget that who we are now is partly a result of the mistakes that we have made when younger. I suppose one can look at it two ways. Years from now, one might cringe when someone brings up something stupid that one said when younger, or one could laugh and say, "Yes, that's what I used to think, now I know better."

I assuredly did NOT use it as a pejorative! I meant it in a very exact way. I would not expect a 15 year old to act like a mature adult as they have not matured. It would be ridiculous to expect that. The word immature is not an insult. It can be, but in context, you might notice it was used in the exact opposite manner.

The posts in isolation would be far worse than in context of his actual age. A level of immaturity is normal when you are young, hence the word immature. It is because one has not had time to mature.

I don't know how old you are Drex, and I am not going to venture a guess.

In life, context is important. Always.

In life, context is important. Always.

By far and away the most immature person I've seen on this forum claims to be 48 y/o in their profile, and nobody ever said anything about it/him one way or the other. I suspect that if Letus didn't mention his age words like "maturity" would never even come up. The Internet in general is not known for reasonable, adult discourse.

Re: I've finaly got a Les Paul. And now?

AGain - guys, take the discussion on maturity to a cozy little table at a French bistro while sipping an Espresso w/ a twist of Lemon.

Now - back to our regularly scheduled Tone discussion.
