I've gone down the speaker rabbit hole again..... Need help!

I need some advice for mixing speakers in my Marshall 1960a from the early 90's with the stock made in England G12t-75's.

(my tone is usually very clean, or Marshall like. But can get very gainy)
My amp: Boss Katana 100 head

I'm currently looking at 2 options
1. G12t-75's on the top, v30's on the bottom (NO X PATTERN WITH v30's!)
2. G12t-75 X pattern with G12m-25 greenbacks (my fav. option)

My reasoning for option 1.
After testing the different speakers back to back, the main differences I could tell with my ears was the following: the very abundant/clear mid-range and tight low end of the v30's and it had allot of treble .VS. the very warm overpowering low-end and aggressive woody mid-range of the 75's and the smooth top end. (I def. favor the 75's, but it's very hard to stand out in a mix with 75's due to the lack of mid-range)

(The reason why I don't want the X pattern with v30's is because they WILL overpower the 75's due to the db. sensitivity, unless the V30's are on the bottom. (can confirm from personal testing)

My reasoning for option 2.
We all know you can't go wrong with a greenback, a true classic! let me just say that I've never played a greenback, but after looking at frequency graph's of these two different speakers on Celestion's website, these speakers are actually very similar in their voicing/volume. I think these speakers would complement each-other allot better than option #1, at least whenever it comes to the lack of mid-range of the 75's and the lack of bass and tightness of the greenbacks, and the overall blending of the different speakers.

It's hard not to pick option 2. because of how perfect it sounds, the ultimate modern/vintage cab. But I want to hear other peoples opinion's/experiences on this matter before I make my final decision.

BTW. This is my first ever thread, so thanks for looking!!!

Re: I've gone down the speaker rabbit hole again..... Need help!

My guess is V30'S and T-75'S are the most commonly used mixed speakers in Marshall cabs.
There's a lot of greatness to the marriage.
I use it (in an X) and I am super happy with them. They compliment each other very well.

I've used quite a few different speakers over the years, but always come back to this combo because in my ears, it sounds right.

I've no experience with greenbacks though.

thanks for the Insight!

The v30's are definitely still on the table, and I have no doubt that the 75's and v30's sound killer together!

Re: I've gone down the speaker rabbit hole again..... Need help!

One more vote for V30's and G12-T75's sounding great together, though I'm pretty sure the V30's were noticeably louder.

The v30's being louder is the biggest downside for me, knowing I like the overall tone of the 75's better.

My favorite thing about v30's is the 'feel' in the mid-range, which the 75's lack.

They are louder if you're within 3 ft of the cabinet, but any further you can't really discern.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I think that people tend to forget that. 10 or 15 feet in front of the cabinet, things sound very different than up close. I've fought with my band mates for years about this. What you might think sounds good up close at a lower volume doesn't necessarily translate to a good sound loudly at a distance.

I mainly record In a tiny room.
which means, I have no choice when It comes to super high volumes and keeping that kind of distance from my cab

Re: I've gone down the speaker rabbit hole again..... Need help!

I know what you mean. A 4x12 in a small room tends to get way too loud way too fast. Even a 2x12 can be pushing it. For that matter my 5 watt amp through a 1x12 is good to record with, but it still sounds loud, if not deafening, in a small room.

If you're going to be running at lower volume, have you considered running just Greenbacks?

I have considered only running greenbacks. I just don't want my sound to be that 'thin' whenever I play metal.

that's why I would like to run them with my 75's to keep things dark and chuggy, while having the mid-range characteristic of the greenbacks.

Re: I've gone down the speaker rabbit hole again..... Need help!

I have made my final desition to go with the Greenback and T75 mix! Even though I enjoy the sound of the Vintage 30's, I just feel like trying something different tbh.
(will provide a update in the near future on how it sounds)

If I end up hating the mix, I will just sell the greenback's and I'll get some V30's.

I've also decided that I won't be Closing this thread down, I still would love to hear everyone's experience mixing these different speakers.

Re: I've gone down the speaker rabbit hole again..... Need help!

IMO the perfect v30 mix is with the k100s.
The k brings-in a wider spread (or at least the impression of it), and also has a harder/clearer less saturated and more percussive nature.

t75/m25 is a great mix choice IMO.

Re: I've gone down the speaker rabbit hole again..... Need help!

A friend I used to play with had an Orange cab he mixed a pair of T-75's I gave him and a pair of Creamback M-65's, and it sounded glorious!

Re: I've gone down the speaker rabbit hole again..... Need help!

Yeah the m-65 would be even more ideal just because the wattage handling.

With a t75/m25 412 the handling is only 100w,,,,,,,although that should cover about any usage of standard guitar tube amps.

I agree that the m-65 would be the best match overall. It all depends if I want to fork over the extra cash :laugh2:

I'm not really worried about the power Issues, given that I have a solid state amp. But If I end up blowing a speaker or two at some point in time, that's $125/250 down the drain.
