Re: I've kind of got Firebird GAS...

Hi there- I don't know for sure if I have posted on this forum before, probably, since I already had a login PW. Anyway, I have a couple of Firebirds, (and an Epi T-Bird Pro as well) One is an early 2000's Gibson-it was a special order from a pretty well-known Canadian guitarist, made in Memphis, it is a nice axe-got the Johnny Winter pups. I am thinking about getting an old pair of 70's minihums to try though. And I'm def going with the Steinbergers one of these days. I have them on my Epi Ltd. Ed. FB, and they are great imo (it has full-size HB's which sound pretty decent, actually). Years ago I had a 64 T-Bird and a '65 FB V. Unfortunately I let them go in the eighties. I have also played a number of other 60's and 70's FB's too, and the neck dive is a bit of a downer (I know, pretty sad pun)...anyway, I just thought I'd throw this link up, of a Trib. demo, by the amazing Greg Koch (who bsides being an awesome player, is hilarious, imo) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5-knKvHPcI

I've always liked the Firebirds, just none have been available to try out before playing.

Definitely a good idea. I've played a few, and they just aren't for me. You also should consider the reverse and non-reverse body styles separately as they hang rather different on a strap. Of the two I thought the non-reverse was more comfortable to play, but both feel big, awkward and HEAVY. This is compared to an Explorer that tips the scales at just over 9lbs.

Yeah...that's one thing I've heard about them that bothered me–I don't want a guitar that I only enjoy playing sitting down. I did watch a video by Rob Chapman and The Captain on the new model with the gearless tuners and they said it felt very comfortable with a strap...but still want to play several before taking that plunge.

Re: I've kind of got Firebird GAS...

I have a '93-'94ish Custom Firebird I that I bought brand new at Sam Ash for a song and never really did anything with. To me it was always thin and anemic sounding. I've given her help with pedals over the years but I've never used her live.

The 300 pound banjo tuners are funny as hell. I usually just grip it like a beast and that covers that problem. It might be funny to let go live and let the neck sag down between songs. I dunno. I don't really want to change anything about her at this point though. It has just been too long.

EDIT:

Oh wait...duh...I put flatwounds on her a few months ago and the improvement was huge.
