I've really fallen in love with the Custom I put in my LP, but.....

A couple weeks ago I put a Custom in my Les Paul and have really grown to like it. The top end is a hair bit shrill, but I'm either going to try some different pots/cap or an A8 swap.

But that's not why I posted this thread. I've been trying to figure out how to get that tone in one or two of my Jackson Dinkys (Alder body, bolt on Maple neck). I know if I put a Custom in one of them, it would just bring out the highs in the pickup even more. It has me scratching my head.

And it doesn't have to be exact, just close. I'm really digging the midrange grind and tight but present lows I'm getting out of the Custom in my LP. And all of my Dinkys have JBs in them already.

The Distortion brought out the midrange grind in my Dinky. You could also try using an oversized ceramic magnet (like the one present in a Distortion model) in the Custom.
Think someone did that already with good results.

To de-shrill it, I use the stock 300k Gibson pots. If you already have those….

There is a really cool tone pot. Can't remember the name. Like 11 clicks of very precise treble cut and doesn't touch the miss.

That's one is on my short list. I'm also considering a 59/C because they seem to have more present mids than a custom, or at least from what I can tell from Keith Merrow's demo that has a bunch of Duncan pups in it, yet is still pretty tight.

And I've had a Screamin' Demon in there. Sounded great, but didn't have this nice of a grind to it. Besides, the SD is going back into my Explorer whenever I get around to it.

Yeah, the 300k pots were going to be my first step, along with experimenting with tone cap values, and I have the ones I pulled out of my Explorer laying around.

Yeah, I've never had a shrillness problem with the Gibson stock 300k pots.

Ditto. I just leave them in there. Perfect compliment for a hot screamer pickup.

Well, I forgot that the JB and the Distortion have similar winds, not exactly the same, but similar. So I figured I'd try some mag swaps so i went to Addiction-FX and ordered C8 & A8 mags to try in one or two of the JBs that are in my Dinkys along with A3, A4, and UOA5 mags to try in the PGn that's in my Les Paul, just for ****s and giggles.

Edit: And yes, I realize that the DD has a double thick ceramic. I just ordered these magnets to expirement with, plus I have a Gibson 500T laying around that I can rob a double thick ceramic from if it comes down to it.
