Ive tried a whole bunch of speaks in my DSL..

Re: Ive tried a whole bunch of speaks in my DSL..

The V30 was originally designed for combo amps like the DSL40C and the DSL401. The original application was the Marshall Studio 15- a 15 watt tube combo amp. From Doyle:

The well known Vintage or Vintage 30 was introduced in 1986 after protestations from Marshall's Steve Grindrod that ceramic speakers did not sound as good as alnico speakers.....

Since in 1986 an alnico was out of the question due to costs, the Vintage 30 was developed as an alternative:

Steve continues the story: " The Vintage was not intended (nor is) a G12H30 but but rather a modern day alnico and was intended purely for the Studio 15... the result was a very fine loud speaker, not quite but very close to the sound of an alnico, (but) with a fatter mid-range...

I myself have come back around in recent years to a new appreciation of the Vintage 30. For some applications it is a great sounding speaker. A thoroughly broken in Vintage 30 can be a very good thing. I just wish sometimes it wasn't so efficient.

i only liked the V30 in a closed cab, this smoothed out some of it bad habits. But in the end i sold it.
If you are V30 fanboy you should check out the WGS Veteran 30 or the Retro 30 (my fav), which are work arounds of the notorious V30. they work much better in combos and open backs. there are some great comparison vids on youtube.

- Red channel, stock, is not much use for me.

- Mine came with tad EL34b's

- I used to have one, and agree, the red channel wasn't that useful. Too much distortion, tone wasn't all that good. I wanted a two channel amp with two good channels, so I sold it.

- I thought they had EL84's.

wanna try a creamback next, prb even better, preamp tubes and a proper bias and speaker helps greatly. I had amps 3 times the price these hold right up then. Might be your cables? Picks? pickup height? guitars? all matters!

Well I have been both a hater and a lover of the V30 and all points in between over the years. Open backed and closed back. It depends on the amp and the room, and situation, and the type of music, I guess. I sometimes really like how they sing once they are broken in. One thing is for sure, that un broken in V30s can be very harsh. A lot of people give up on them. I found that a DSL often needs those extra thick mids to help it sound not so modern.

The old JCM2000 DSL40 had EL84s but the new design uses 2 EL34s.

Besides the stock speaker the only one i tried was the Warehouse British Lead which warmed it up nicely. Nos tubes really help if you get the right ones and I never use the stock JJ's! If you use a thin pick you tone with be bright or Dunlop Tortex 73 yellow dont sound good either too much top end and that. V pick UL tradition is smooth on the top end for the red channel. Have to experiment.

As mentioned, mine is the new 40c with EL34s, not the older 401 with El84s
