Welcome to the forum!

If you are talking about your own Dinky that has one humbucker and two singe coils then id suggest the emg 81/sa/sa set if you want to go the emg way. My friend has this in his guitar and it sounds awsome. With this set, wll the pickups are active, and therefore you dont have a mixed combination of active and passive pu's

However, you should describe your playing style and what other equipment you use, and what you want you tone to be like after mods.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

ummm well i play metalcore, deathmetal/grindcore and i play out live through a DOD 31 band rack EQ on the effects loop of a b52 stealth series. ummmm i like crunchy but full of bass guitar sounds... some bands As I Lay Dying, Job for a Cowboy, Cattle Decapitation, etc.

edit - also can you give me a direct link to a good reliable place to buy a 81/sa/sa active set

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

dont get the 81, its not that bassy. get 85 or something.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

not a fan of the sound of the 85 from the clips ive heard plus my b-52 halfstack is full of bass and i have the eq i just think the 85 sounds undesirable with is also what i think about the SA put i think all singles aren't my style.... im thinking im just not going to replace the singles.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

also i have the old jackson humbuckers from my Jackson JS30RR Rhoads would either one of those sound like an 81 i cant remember how they sound....

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

go for it then. sadly i know nothing of the singles.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

Listen, Duncan makes a great set of Actives. You could get the Livewire Heavy Metal Bridge, and either the Classic or the Hot Livewire Singles for the middle and neck, depending on if you still want hot tones from the neck and mid, or if you want some better cleans and vintage tone.

Evan Skopp says the Livewires for strat are way underated, and really likes them a lot. The Heavy Metal Bridge will be absolutely brtal for metal, and will give you killer lows and all the grind you will ever need.

I think that's a way better option than the EMG's. The EMG's are kind of old and tired...that been there, done that kind of thing...ya know?

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

hmmm im liking the idea not the price but for now i could jsut get the humbucker but does anyone have a soundbyte or video of the Livewire Heavy Metal Bridge in action

Go here to hear a short clip. I did a quick search of the clips room, and it seems no on has posted any clips. I understand there is not a hotter active on the market...period. The most brutal distortion you can get from an active pickup. It will give you NO cleans, so be warned.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

i forgot about the livewires! But jeff is right, emg's are in everything these days it seems, some have described the 81 as sterile, but i couldent compare them to anything else as ive not heard the lives. Dont ignore a good passive though.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

what are some of the best single coil pickups for a nice acoustic sound and what are some of the best single coils for a twangy sound.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

I had the 81 in my MH-400 with floyd and now it's in a H-400 fixed bridge. It has more bottom end grid now for sure, but it was very good in my axe too.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

try a duncan custom or a JB these are best for metal if you ask me:)
the emgs sound too artificial and lack any real character

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

I have a Fender Strat with a Custom Custom in the bridge and two authentic 60's single coils...the CC is straight-up crunchy and really good if you have a bassy amp. Then I just set the neck single coil really low in the pickguard and you've got acoustic-style cleans, and the middle single coil's a bit higher so it twangs out more. Works for me and I get pretty heavy.

Another set-up i've thought about trying is a set of Rails pickups...you could put a DiMarzio X2N in the bridge, a Duncan Hot Rails in the neck and a Cool Rails or Vintage Rails in the middle. Then you'd have your riff pickup in the bridge, solos from the Hot Rails and cleans with the middle.

It seems like with grindcore and the more extreme metals it's more important to have a powerful amp and a good distortion pedal than the right pickups in your axe. Your pickups will probably not make as big a difference as all the sliders on your rackmount EQ anyway.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

I never get tired of recommending the Dimarzio Evolution. it sounded so damn geat in my Jackson DXMG(same as the dk2 dinky, just different pickups). The pickups was made for a superstrat with that wood combination and sounds it's best in there.

Re: Jackson dinky looking for a metal sound

since u play mainly those categories of music, plus u want a full bassy punchy tone, i'd sugegst the duncan distortion set. you cant go wrong with them for metal. either that or the invader bridge.
