Jackson Dinky owners - looking for reviews and advice

Hey all,

Currently I sport a Jackson SLSMG that had active EMG 81/85 set that I have since replaced with Duncan Blackouts Metal & Livewire Classic II for good reason. Also I have a PRS SE Paul Allender with the passive pickups, which need to get replaced with a JB & Jazz set.

I've been looking at a 3rd axe to add to the mix and have been looking at the Jackson Dinky series, specifically the Jackson DK2T model.

The DK2T has the humbuckers I want in my PRS, so I'll transplant those to the PRS and install my old EMG's in it.

My main thing on Jackson is the neck... I love the compound radius of the Jackson series but do not like the Floyd Rose trems common on Jacksons.

I've been thinking of getting the DK2T model because it has the Jackson neck I love and the non-trem body. The only concern I have is it's a bolt-on neck and not set in. How do you all think this will affect tone?

Unfortunately, my local Guitar Center doesn't have one for me to try, so I have to buy one and return it within 30 days if I don't like it.

Tell me what Dinky you got, how you compare it to your other guitars, what you like and dislike...

For the Paul Allender PRS go for a Duncan Custom (TB-5)/59N combo instead of JB/Jazz.

Re: Jackson Dinky owners - looking for reviews and advice

My Dinky is a DK2 reverse with a really thin neck and a licensed Floyd. It's really a very good guitar. I have a TB-5 Duncan Custom in the bridge and a Full Shred in the neck. It has a lot of bite and chunk to it. The treble has plenty of cut without being shrieky, and it plays like butter. The Full Shred in the neck is really clear and articulate. It cleans up nice and does great with shreddy high-gain stuff. Overall, it sounds more like the old Steve Vai tones than the Ibanez that I put Evolutions in.

Eh,

I dunno guys... I used to have a blood red PRS Custom 22 w/ birds and I put a JB / Jazz setup in it and it was beautiful. Granted, now I have a wife so the only PRS I can get are the Korean made ones... but I gotta make do with what I can get ya know??

I think the JB's are probably the best setup for this guitar for the Cradle of Filth and old Satyricon covers this guitar will be playing. I just want your thoughts on the Dinkys and if I'll notice any draw-back from owning set-neck guitars from 1999 on...

I had a cheapo Dinky, a JS20, and it played as well as my MIA Strat.

It's neck was amazing.

I can't imagine what a higher end Dinky would feel like.

I'd take my Japanese Dinky over a Strat any day. Imagine how happy I'll be when I start buying DK1's. My Jackson Custom Shop Dream: The Steve Vai Crossroads guitar.

Edit: Apparently it's already been done. Well, they'll have to do it again some day.

A super cool Jackson Dinky with EMG's = you won't be able to discern in your tone if its set or bolt. (My humble opinion of course.)

I own a (import) DKMG Dinky (it's like 4 yrs. old) and I've previously owned a (USA) DK1.

The only thing(s) I can say I dislike about it is the lower quality materials used to build the thing. Mostly because the tone gets muddier overall quicker and, to a lesser degree, the hardware is "soft". Those thing's being said, it's still plays like a true Jackson. :) These comparisons have been made versus my (USA) Soloist.

Don't worry about the tone of a Jackson; while there are differences in tone due to neck construction builds, a properly set up Jackson will feel relatively spindly, but has perhaps an unequaled speed factor regardless.

If you were to tone down on the sharp looks, custom paint jobs, and ungodly speed - you could easily say it's just another axe.

Re: Jackson Dinky owners - looking for reviews and advice

I don't own a Dinky as such.
However, my friend bought one back around March 2007, and during that year, I spent heaps of time at his house and ended up playing the guitar even more than he did, so I got to know it extremely well and even now I still play it on occasion.
I used the guitar for various genres, from playing Buckethead covers in front of an audience at school, to reggae, to blues/blues rock and the guitar really did cover the gamut of genres with ease
He has the DK2S model, which I believe is just the same as the DK2T but with a trem and sustainiac neck pickup.
The neck is fantastic and supremely comfortable to play for extended periods of time and the the bolt neck will not effect the tone negatively.
The guitar sounds great, period. The only thing I don't like about the neck is that it doesn't have the upper fret access of my Ibanez RG guitars.
As for the stock pickups, personally I'd prefer active pickups, but for your tastes the stockers may be fine.

Re: Jackson Dinky owners - looking for reviews and advice

My Washburn MG's are more Grover Jackson guitars that any new (fender )Jackson Dinky is.
If you can find a USA MG they normally sell low and are killers!!

Re: Jackson Dinky owners - looking for reviews and advice

USA MG Jacksons? Can you find me some examples on Ebay or elsewhere?

Re: Jackson Dinky owners - looking for reviews and advice

These are on par with the USA Dinky and the Suhr moderns. The board radius is a super flat 20 and most will sell under $750. That one 120 was a STEAL and I was trying to restrain myself!
Here is a KILLER 94 but it is an early one and likely has the pretty chunky neck profile ( Grover Jackson loves chunky necks BTW) from before Rudy made Grover re-design the necks.

I've played the DKMG (same as DK2T but has EMG and nicer inlays) of my friend a lot since the past year and a half and all I can say is Wow the neck on this thing is Awesome. It is definitly one of the most confortable neck I've played and the guitar itself doesn't cost a lot so It's cool.

Do what you want with the pickups, but know that the Dinky necks are awesome and sounds cool too. Plus, I don't think the neck heel is that much annoying.

Re: Jackson Dinky owners - looking for reviews and advice

I have a DK2 that's about thirteen of fourteen years old. I bought it new from the store and I've been loving it ever since. Hardware and frets and trem etc. have stood the test of time very well. I think MIJ jacksons are a steal at some of the prices they go for used.

A fretboard with a continuous 20" radius would give me menstrual cramps. In my fret hand, I mean.

I'm sure it will decrease the sustain an kill the tone. It will probably sound like dog$hit.

Seriously, if bolt ons sounded so bad, why would anyone own one???

Save yourself some concerns and get a SL2HT.

Re: Jackson Dinky owners - looking for reviews and advice

Don,

Just asked the question because:

1. I never owned a bolt-on neck guitar before and

2. If I'm going to spend money I want it to be the last purchase for a while and also want to make sure I am happy with my purchase and

3. My local Guitar Center doesn't have any in-stock for me to play so I thought I would ask the most knowledgeable group I know, which is the SD forum.
