Jackson JS32-7

I just picked up my first 7 string. A Jackson JS32-7.

The woods used were decent. The extended scale is a big plus when going lower than the traditional low "E". The design is traditional and basic making it a good platform for modifications should they be needed. I just brought it home and I am still getting a feel for it. It may not need anything.

I was looking for something cost effective to explore the 7 string world. I am not a metal player at all. Much more into Vai than the drop tuned metal crowd. I realized I know nothing of the new models SD has for modern rock sounds. I have read through the descriptions and find that without real world experience that is not real helpful. I know what a JB/59/Custom/PG etc sound like so I have that point of reference but they seem a bit removed from the new models. Sentient/Nasgul etc no idea

If I want PAF is whats the option? Blast'em to oblivion output? That's not what I want but at least it's a reference point. A JB/Jazz set for example is still an option but I want this guitar to be a very different voice than what I have traditionally used. Modern but versatile I suppose sums it up.

I will likely replace the 3 way switch with a 5 way super switch and convert the tone to a bass cut even if I stay with the stock pickups.

The Sentient is a great 7 string pickup for a lot more than metal. I'd start with that. Great EQ, and great across all gain ranges, too.

Iirc those things had fairly hot stock pickups. So expect many aftermarket pups to be a drop in output.

I'd go for a Sentient too as Mincer advised and pair it w/ a Pegasus. The Sentient is very much in the PAF realm, but modern sounding. I have it paired with a Nazgul, but that pickup - while being a beast at what it is intended for - is anything but versatile. However, the Pegasus is the other bridge model intended to match with the Sentient, is still modern but much more tamer and versatile than the Naz.
