Jackson RRXT advice

I was hoping I could get some advice on some pickups. Please understand I am a new player and need some advice from the pro'). Right now I have an Epiphone SG 400 that is torn down to replace the tuners, pots and pickups (Seymore Custom 5 and a 59). For this guitar I am going for an AC/DC, Sabbath and Blues sound.

The amp I am using is a Marshall DSL40C. There is nothing else in the mix.

I have a Jackson RRXT that should be arriving today. That model has the below pickups in it.

Duncan Designed™ alnico HB102N (neck) and high-output ceramic HB102B (bridge) humbucking pickups.

From what I have read the Duncan Designed pickups are not as good as the Seymore pickups. So my question is, if you just picked up that guitar would first attempt to tweak the original pickups or move straight to replacing them?

For this guitar I was looking for looking for a sound like Judas Priest, Metallica, Ozzy with Randy.

I have looked at the following Seymore's which I thought might get me close to that sound.
Duncan Distortion
Black winter
Nazgul - Sentient

Thanks for your time and input.

I would at least play the Jackson with the stock pups. You may like them, let your ears be the judge. If you don't like them you can always replace them later.

+ another for just playing it

"if" it "needs something",at least you'll have it hands-on to get a good read on it(unplugged tone, sustain, blah blah blah)...

Prolly surprise you,honestly.

Re: Jackson RRXT PU advice

Years ago, I bought a Shecter 7 string that came with the DD HB-7 set. This is a 7 string version of the HB 102 set. Other than wiring the neck pickup to a push/pull for series/parallel, and swapping a regular ceramic into the bridge, they're still in that guitar. Every time I get the urge to change them, I play the guitar for a bit, then go "Nope."

Re: Jackson RRXT PU advice

Give it a lot of play time and see what you think. Scott Ian uses an x series live and it still has the DD pup in it. Based off the bands you listed ypu may want something Ceramic, but that pup wpuld get you pretty far.

Thanks guys, play it awhile first and see how she runs.

The small amount of time I have had to play it I did actually enjoy it.

Thanks ago folks!

The Dokkenbucker is a JB with a regular ceramic. The HB 102 bridge pickup is based on the JB. The HB 7 set is based on the HB 102 set. I liked the stock HB 7 bridge. I love it with a regular ceramic in it. Swapping magnets is even easier than soldering.

I have a JB+/dokkenbucker, and I love it. It's like a JB with more bass and squeal. I hope to make it a JB8 soon, I've loved all the clips of the alternative 8 so hopefully it's a similar sound

Re: Jackson RRXT PU advice

I tried an A8 in an actual JB and I didn't like it as much as the regular ceramic.

Really? What qualities didn't you like about it? If it's a no go I'll just get an alternative 8

Re: Jackson RRXT PU advice

Maybe I didn't leave the magnet in long enough for it to settle, but to my ear the harmonics that I like in the JB disappeared or more likely, moved lower in pitch. I also happen to have an Alternative 8 which doesn't sound like the JB8 to me. Probably because it was wound with the A8 magnet in mind. I actually wound up finally settling on an RCUOA5 for the JB, which I really enjoy.
If I could, I would add a couple of ceramic spacers to it, but that's about the only thing I would change at this point.

Sounds like you do a lot of changing:18:

Do you have one guitar that is the go to one and only the strings get changed?

Actually, once I get stuff dialed in, I usually leave it. But I always enjoy the tinkering. I have one guitar that's stock. My Ibby V Blade. I came with Dimarzio D-Activators. Every once in a while I think about putting an X2N in the bridge. Haven't done it yet though.

Re: Jackson RRXT advice

I am very new to guitar playing and love to upgrade or tinker with anything.

Unfortunately due to some major physical issues I have the RRTX I cannot play and my SG I cannot finish putting in my new parts. I made a dumb mistake and ordered the wrong tonepro set for the SG and cannot get the one I need right now. When I am healed up I will be having a whole lot of fun though.

Re: Jackson RRXT advice

So when did the JB+ become the Dokkenbucker?
I don't know, back in the late 80's early 90's? I read about it somewhere in the Duncan blog. Or Forum.
Oh and Exojam, heal quickly.
