Jackson vs Ibanez

Ok, so, i am looking for an affordable guitar, i am playing bass and want to start with guitar aswell, so i am looking for a good guitar for metal, to get that pulverizing and crushing tone, i have a budget for around 280$ for the guitar, SO, i was thinking about an Jackson JS-22 Dinky, and then about Ibanez GSA60.
the thing is that Jackson has two humbuckers, wich i think is better when using both at the same time, and the Ibanez has one humbucker at the bridge, one middle and one neck single coil, and if i choose that, i think of using the neck pickup for clean(put in any nice pickup for cleans) and the humbucker and middle single coil for high gain and fuzz.
wich one should i choose, i like them both so i am not completely sure, and wich one has the best tremolo? the jackson one have no nut lock, and i kinda like that, that makes it easier to tune, and i dont know about Ibanez, and how is the overall quality on both? ofc they are cheaper guitars so i understand its not the best, but it should be good enough to use on small gigs, and stuff like that, and anyone can suggest any good amp for metal? :fingersx:

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

No experience with Jackson, so I'll give my 5p on Ibanez.

You could probably find a used MIJ Ibanez RG or old Roadstar for that much on Craigslist or something.

Something like this perhaps: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-Ibanez...e-/141276640029?pt=Guitar&hash=item20e4be731d. Excellent deal on this one, in fact. Neck on these is more like Fender C but with a 14" fingerboard radius, pretty nice imo. I'd get it myself if I weren't broke :P.

If you get a HSS, you can easily put in a single sized humbucker in it if you don't want a true single coil. I think the Roadstar in the link above has stacked single coils (not entirely sure).

I see that you're in Norway, so things might be different there. Know that guitars in Europe generally are higher priced than in the US.

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

If you want a Tremolo, I would save up a little more cash and get a guitar with a Floyd Rose. Floyds aren't any more difficult to set up, and they're more stable.

Although, you could block the non locking if it gives you too much trouble.

As far as which is better, playability is a wash. I own exapmles of both brands and like both. But as far as the ones with Floyd Rose/locking trems go, I prefer Ibanez's Edge series trems over the Jackson branded Liscensed Floyds, but prefer my Jacksons that have real Original Floyds over those.

I don't know what the used market is like over there, but if I were on a budget like that, I'd just sit on those funds and add to them while keeping an eye out with a midrange Ibanez with an Edge series trem. Over here you can find them for $200 on up, depending on the model.

Oh yeah, one more thing, in general cheaper Ibanez guitars have crappy pickups.

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

I don't own any jackson, my ibby arz800 (LP style) delivers pretty well. But be aware that "made in China" ibbys (roughly those that cost new under 600-800 euros ) might have quality control issues. I got mine right after the second go. The first one had a problem in the tailpiece stud detached from the body bushing, so i returned it and the second one was superb. So beware of cheap ibanezes (Iron Label, Artist, etc). Made in indonesia/Japan ones are superb, but pricey.

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

ok thanks, yeah, things look a bit different up here in norway, need to buy my stuff new because the shipping from ebay would kill all the budget. yea, i prefer non locking, that makes the measier to tune, and i think ill swich out the pickups not too long after i get the guitar.

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

Really dude at that price point I wouldnt be worried about the name at all. They are all only made in a few indonesian or chinese factories at that point anyways. What i would be worried about is the individual instrument. In that price range you have to pick through a bunch to find a good one. Look for one that sounds good and the frets feel good. You dont want to have to spend a bunch of money to have someone clean up the frets or worse you dont want to put up with bad fret work.

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

If you know what you are looking for you can get a high quality mij for peanuts. I have seen great guitars go for cheap many times. As for the comparison between the two its impossible because both brands make exceptional guitars. But if it was me i would be looking for something used.

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

I see, thanks for all of the help, really apreciate that, but the only problem is that, here in my city, i have two different stores, one has the jackson, and the other one has ibanez, but none of them are in stock, so i am just wondering about what i should do. I dont have as much freedom of choice as people in the USA does ;) so i need to make the best out of what i can buy. And, i can ofc just go ahead and try to build the guitar myself, but i am not sure if that wont get really expensive really fast. But on the other hand, ill have that guitar for a long time, instead of buying new ones as i get better.

What about ebay?

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

I have two Ibanez RG's
I like them alot
the Wizard II neck feels way different from the Fender style necks of my Strats

I like the necks they are just different feeling
flatter on the back where your thumb rides
the fretboard is flatter also
this makes barre chords more difficult

the Gio model you mentioned probably has something totally different

both my RG's, one was a floor model and one was bought used
cost less than $250

save your money
get something nice

short of that
either will preform nicely

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

Seriously, get something used. Those are both bottom of the line guitars. I know we're spoiled here in the USA with used gear prices, but neither of those are worth getting. They both have junk tremolo bridges that can't be upgraded later. If you don't need a tremolo, try to find an Ibanez RG2EX_ or RG3EX_ model. Those have nice necks, decent bodies, and a hardtail bridge. With the Jacksons, the least you'll want is something with a Floyd Rose Licensed bridge, or a string-through Tune-O-Matic.

I'm speaking as someone that typically plays $100-ish guitars so I'm not a snob. I prefer to get the cheapest guitar and upgrade it as I see fit, but you'll be really stuck with those two.

I think the choice is obvious.

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

Are Jackson and Ibanez the only brands they carry? Are there any Yamahas or Tokais out there, for example? Is there really no used market at all that you could search a guitar from?

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

Definitely try used. Of the two I'd go with the Jackson over the Ibby. I prefer 2 humbuckers over 2 singles and a hum.

Re: Jackson vs Ibanez

Guitar players don't use both pickups at the same time to obtain heavy tone, we use the bridge instead. So don't let the 2 humbuckers configuration fool you.
