Jay Turser basses

Re: Jay Turser basses

I bought one of the '51 P-bass (Sting signature type) style ones on behalf of a friend of mine, and it was better than we expected for the money. I haven't asked him how it's held up, but he hasn't called to complain, and that was 4-5 years ago.

I did make sure to foil shield the control cavity before I shipped it to him.

Re: Jay Turser basses

One of the girls I know has a Jay Turser bass. For the life of me I can't remember the model, but it's a modern neck through design. It's got active electronics and coil splits. It's really nice.

Re: Jay Turser basses

I worked in a shop that carried a bunch of Jay Turser instruments. The basses were of/about the same quality of the Squier basses. I'm sure they were made in the same factory. Where the shop really sold them to was to people who bought a bass at a pawn shop (got a great deal) for $150. Then found out they needed to put new strings and $100 worth of work on their pawn shop prize to bring it up to playing ability. In the end, they could have paid the $200 to buy a new Turser, and come out ahead by buying new.

Re: Jay Turser basses

My friend's probably could've benefited from a better bridge, but as it was, it had a good range of sounds from that single-coil pickup.

Re: Jay Turser basses

You're far better off with a used higher-end Squier. The Turser stuff is really crappy to me. The pawn and music shop by my house has carried them (as new instruments) for years. They always have at least 30 in stock. Without exaggeration, I have played scores of them over the years. I am all for cheap guitars and bang for the buck; you won't catch me trying to talk someone out of a low-end guitar just due to brand name. However, when it comes to Tursers, I really wanted them to be worthwhile...but not once was I ever tempted to buy one of them, and I would never recommend one to anyone, unless it was free or close to free. There are FAR better bangs for the buck out there. Every last thing on them is of the ultimate level of cheesiness. They just aren't worth ****ing with, with what other great values are out there at this time.

I'm not quite as down on them as ItsaBass, but I wuld say he's not that far off, either. As is usually the case with cheaper stuff, it's a crapshoot as to whether you get a pretty good one or a crappy one. I've found them to generally be on par with lower end Squires. I have an electric resonator that's pretty cool, sounds awesome, but the build quality is not the greatest. Nothing exactly wrong with it, just feels sorta cheap. I have played a few, though that were pretty darn good. I'd suggest not buying one that you can't try out first. If you like it, then go for it.

Wait a minute, I just remembered that this was the bass forum. Basses usually take a lot more of a beating than a guitar, so I'm revising my advice. I'd avoid buying a new one. If you find an older used one you like, you won't be paying the depreciation, and any structural issues should have already surfaced or been dealt with.

Re: Jay Turser basses

Turser stuff is all over the map.

My bass player just got one given to him, I'll see him Friday and report back

Re: Jay Turser basses

Cant say for bass but my buddy has a jay turser les paul that blows away most gibsons I've played, the only one it came up short against was a 1960 VOS. 2 piece flamed maple top and one piece mahogany back with a set magogany neck on that one, not chambered either but still remarkably light. Really depends. His is an older one, like much older.

Bass had a few parts missing and no strings so I can't really say much about it

Re: Jay Turser basses

Not to hijack the thread, but my brother just received a travel bass he ordered from Guitar Fetish. I already had an Xaviere guitar, so I figured that if my brother wanted a bass he could play in hotel rooms while he was on the road it would be a good cheap way to practice. He took my advice and got an Xaviere and that bass is killer right out of the box. Real Alnico pickups, actual candy apple paintjob, nubone nut and a very good set-up make this bass a great value with case at $250.

I've been playin' the hell outta it too. lolz

Re: Jay Turser basses

Turser aren't bad pieces, especially for the price.

But I have noticed that you do need to cherry pick through them, even with in the same models.
Some are a real steal for the quality you get, but others are a bit of a dog.

Re: Jay Turser basses

OK so it's all together and re-strung. Got used at rehearsal last night and I brought it home to tweak it a little.

Not 1/2 bad, the pickup sounded decent and it plays pretty well. Need to shim the neck a bit to square up the neck angle but otherwise it's all right.

Re: Jay Turser basses

My friend has that one, in white. From what I understand, the GFS L'il Killer works great in those basses...
