jazz bass; antiquity vs antiquity II

Guys, I'm new here and sorry if this has been covered to death, but I can't find any reference to it.

Need pups for my Hwy1 jazz. Antiquity or Antiquity II?
What are the differences?
I'm looking for a good vintage punchy growl with bottom.

welcome to the forum!!

for a jazz bass i'd say the antiquity II's would be perfect. nice big bottom with lots of punch. im assuming an alder body right? in a very bright ash body i might go the other way but for almost anything else i think the II's are great

I just got a set of antiquities ... then realized there were also the IIs. Maybe I can exchange them.

if you got the II's stick with them...those are pretty bad ass sounding pickups...in fact, Im gonna end up getting a set (I think) for my Jazz Bass!

If you pop them in please post a review...there is very little on bass pickup on the forum!

Sorry I wasn't clear. I got the antiquities, not the antiquity IIs. I was hoping maybe I could exchange them.
In any case, yes I'd be happy to post a review, for what it's worth.

Duncan has a 21 day return policy...you should be able to swap them out if you haven't had them too long...

Thanks again...I actually just got 'em off eBay, so I don't know how, or if, or who would exchange them for me...any thoughts on that?

Yes they are new....but I do not have them yet.
I don't believe the eBay seller is an authorized Duncan dealer, but I don't know...thanks

if the guy you bought them from is a Duncan dealer you can swap them out with the 21 day exchange policy, if he is not a dealer you might have to try and swap them out with someone on the trading post or maybe you could sell them outright and then just buy the Ant II's...

OK thanks. I can't figure what the sonic differences would be, and can't find info as far as specs that would give me a clue.

Ok...here is the deal (Im sorry bro...I thought somebody had already covered this for you)...the Antiquity I's and II's are the same except for the magnets...the Antiquity I's use Alnico 2 magnets and the Antiquity II's use Alnico 5 magnets. First, ALL Fender J-Bass pickups are Alnico 5, then never used Alnico 2. The difference between the 2 is that Alnico 5 has a stronger, more solid bottom end and a sharper treble while the Alnico 2 has slightly less (and slightly softer) bass and less treble as well as more midrange. It is not a night and day difference but very good for fine tuning a guitar (or bass). The classic J-Bass tone was made with Alnico 5 pickups...I prefer alnico 2 in almost ALL of my guitars and in almost ALL positions but for a bass Alnico 5 is the way to go (IMO).

If you are looking for a little more growl and tighter all around tone the II's are the way to go.

Bass pickups don't get discussed much on this forum but there is a lot of information available on the "TalkBass" forum. You will find a lot of reviews on tha Ant II's there and 90% are favorable.

if the Antiquity I doesn't use the alnico5, why did they make it that way? I was under the impression they were supposed to be sort of accurate vintage-style replacements.
I'm not knocking Seymour Duncan, just curious.

Some people like the tone of alnico 2 over alnico 5. And some feel that alnico 2 sounds like 50 year old alnico 5 that has lost some of it's strength...as in a vintage '62 or '63 Jazz Bass. Alnico 2 has a nice plucky warmth to it...it's easy on the ears. Also, alnico 2 has a softer magnetic field so you can move the pickup closer to the strings before the magnets start to pull the strings out of tune. I like 'em both and some instruments, especially heavy instruments, that might have a bit to bright of a tone with an alnico 5 pickup sound better with alnico 2. It's nice to have a choice.
