Jazz Bass Linear Humbucker 4 String

Re: Jazz Bass Linear Humbucker 4 String

They are supposed to be more articulate than ordinary jazz pups.

I just ordered one for 5 string but with ceramic magnet and copper shielding. With ceramic; mine will be warm and modern with an articulate high end. The A5 would be fat, articulate, and vintagey.

Thanks for weighing in.

Would it be possible (or a good option) to order one ceramic and one A5? (I have no idea whether they can be mixed--sorry).

It might help to be shown a picture of the pickup with the plastic cover off.

What other Jazz Bass pickups are you accustomed to hearing?

Re: Jazz Bass Linear Humbucker 4 String

Here's what I have in the basses I use most:

76 Fender Precision w/SD QP
'84 MIJ Fender Jazz Bass Special w/SD Hot for P & Hot Stack for J
'87 MIJ Fender Squier Jazz w/SD QP for Jazz

I love the QP for Jazz pickups in the Squier, but I may be looking for something warmer (just to have a variation).

I'm really not sure how to interpret what jaybonitrane said about ceramic being "warm" versus A5s being "vintagey."

Isn't "vintagey" warm?

Re: Jazz Bass Linear Humbucker 4 String

i think that pup is two pups side by side that each cover two strings. like a split p bass pup but with narrower coils right next to each other. i bet it sounds awesome.

Re: Jazz Bass Linear Humbucker 4 String

Jeremy: According to the description on the page where the pickup is described, you are absolutely correct:

Designed by bass player and head of R&D, Kevin Beller, the Linear Jazz bass humbucker utilizes two coils that sit next to each other under the cover. The way these two coils are wired creates a sonic fatness and oomph that can be missing from traditional single coil Jazz bass pickups.

My Squier Jazz is wired with a DPDT, which I love. I wonder if that can be done with these...

Vintagey Tone can be warm especially with an old ampeg amp.

The type of warmth that comes from ceramic is more immediate and steady...in my opinion ceramic is warmer than alnicos.
And if wound properly the ceramic can be just as articulate.

But ceramics do not have vintage tone..but what is vintage anyway? I say vintage means the tone of the 50's and 60's

Some vintagey pups can sound like a horn or a piano on the high end....I dont want that on mine.

Me neither! Thanks for clarifying. fwiw, I use a (pretty ancient at this point) Musicman 100B (tube) head into Mesa Boogie cabs.
