Jazz Box Humbuckers

So I'd like to find a set of humbuckers that sound like the old PAFs Gibson put in the L-5 from late 50s - 60s. I'm looking at the Antiquity humbuckers and would like any advice regarding their sound or another set that would give me that vintage jazz tone. They would go in an Epi Joe Pass.

Re: Jazz Box Humbuckers

A set of Seth Lovers will work wonders in just about any guitar, especially if you're looking for an early PAF tone.

Re: Jazz Box Humbuckers

I agree- the Antiquites would be the ones to get. Seths would have more mids, and work well, too.

Re: Jazz Box Humbuckers

I think you can get some great jazz tones from a '59 neck pickup and a little tone knob usage.

Re: Jazz Box Humbuckers

What pickups are currently installed? If stock, what year? What don't you like about them, ie What would you change to sound more vintage? Can you link a youtube to what tone you like?

Re: Jazz Box Humbuckers

Seth's are the favorite PAF of some of the Duncan moderators/admins. Some members have issues with Ant's aged (degaussed) A2 magnets as being on the weak side. After all, A2's are one of the lowest output magnets when they're at full strength.

Re: Jazz Box Humbuckers

Another vote for the Seths. They have a good balance of vintage chime and bass. The Ants are a little more vintage and not as round as the Seths. There's also the Benedetto which is designed for ultra detailed jazz tone. The 59 and A2P are really nice and round for jazz but less vintage.

I have a '59N with an A2 magnet in my Heritage 575, It's pretty sweet! I'd like to try the Benedetto sometime, but for now, the '59/A2 stays.

Re: Jazz Box Humbuckers

You can order Seths that are potted, but it sort of defeats some of the touch sensitivity of them.

You always make the oddest appeals to populism, Seems strange to say "Hey this dude is a forum moderator and he likes it so must be good" As if being a mod or admin somehow elevates their choices in pickups. Its just an odd statement to make. The seths are fantastic enough pickups to warrant recommendation without odd appeals to authority.

To the OP my concern is the Joe Pass guitar, I used to have one of those and it wasnt a very lively guitar at all. Mild softer pickups sounded SUPER round and lacked definition. Now if you play with only flat wounds and your tone knob down this might be right up your alley. Listen to your guitar and the set up you want. I wound up with a set of Pearly Gates in mine to try and liven it up a bit.

Re: Jazz Box Humbuckers

So:
Antiquities
59
Seths

Pick your budget and EQ preferences.

Re: Jazz Box Humbuckers

I'm a closet Jazz hack. My call would have been:

Seths - obvious choice is obvious
59's never a bad choice - maybe not uber authentic, but there is a tone control...
A2P's are a great Jazz choice - let the pickup to the work. No need for tone control use!

Can't speak to Antiquities, but people do seem to love them.
