I’ve used both prefer tone of red better but like the stiffness of black. I also love Jazztone 205. Probably my favorite. Picks are personal but love using different types. Thanks

Re: Jazz III Red or Black

These days Jazz III XL Ultex is the way to go for me. But if I can't get the Ultex, than it's definitely the black XL. Regular Jazz is just way too small for my hands...

cf max-grip jazz3

I was going to say this same thing.

But before I discovered the Max Grip, I had a pile of red and black Jazz III's laying around just about wherever I frequently played guitar. The reds are slightly more mellow I find, in contrast the clear presence of the blacks, but it's a subtle difference for sure.

Re: Jazz III Red or Black

Ultex...the semi clear one. Much better grip for me as well as all the articulation, plus they aren't as slick on the strings, so they have a bit more oomf.

If I can't find those, then it's the red ones.

I like Tortex Jazz III's. I like the size and shape of Jazz III's, but I prefer the thwappy tone of Tortex. I use 1.14mm.

I'm not a huge fan of Kirk Hammet . . . but . . . these are the Jazz IIIs for me:

FWIW, I get along with any of the Jazz IIIs. The regular reds are great, but kinda slippery unless you scuff them up with a knife or other sharp object. The black ones are fine, but don't sound as good as the red ones. The ultex ones are great, but semi-transparent which means they do this disappearing act every time I set one down or (God forbid) drop 'em on the floor.

Sparkle purple ones are the best though.

I use the Jazz III shape, but just made of Tortex. I don't like either the red or black nylon. I had used Gator Grip for years before I went to the Jazz III shape. The nylon has a softer sound to me, which I don't like.

I like the max grip carbon fiber Jazz IIIs. I have the red and regular black ones as well but keep reaching for the max grips.

Re: Jazz III Red or Black

I use the purple tortex large Jazz III XLs some, the regular ones are too small for me, I go between those and the blue or purple standard shape tortex.

Nylon still has notable "plink" sound too, that really bugs me.

Re: Jazz III Red or Black

Try the Ernie Ball Prodigy picks. They're a similar shape but with a sharp beveled edge and very stiff material. Very responsive picks for pinch harmonics. Maybe not the best for smooth jazz.

Try the Jazztone 205. It’s made of ultex, is extremely durable and has a great tone in my opinion. I used to use the Ultex Jazz III but I like the 205’s better.

I hadn't seen these before. I need to check them out...slightly different shape, but I like the material.

Re: Jazz III Red or Black

I originally started with the red Jazz iii, then graduated to black, and went back and forth. But it was a happy day when I discovered the purple Tortex Jazz III, used those for years for the snappy tone and control!

After reading an interview with Dimebag I tried using a knife to rough them up a bit for grip, and that was awesome.

Have flirted with the OG Petrucci Jazz III, standard tortex, and Brain Cats Tongue picks for awhile, Ultex Jazz III XL is what I'm using now but have been thinking I should go back to the old purple mini Jazz III, complete with knife marks like more than a decade ago. There's something about the immediacy of those.

If I had to choose one, it would be the Tortex version

Re: Jazz III Red or Black

Carbon fiber jazz3 max-grips have a different tone than the nylon or stiffo.
They have a clearer attack that works especially well for heavy muting and heavy thick gain.
To me they sound like a slightly thinner pick than their actual thickness.

What is the thickness of the standard jazz3 series? (is it 1.3?)

What is the material/thickness of the gator grips?

Re: Jazz III Red or Black

I’ve been using the pitch black Tortex Jazz iii 1.14 picks for years. Although I swear theybused to be called “black gold” 15-some years ago... Before that were the purple tortex Jazz iii’s. I think I might still have one of those worn down sitting in a box somewhere.... I tried a plain old red jazz iii years ago because I’d heard so many people use them and I hated it. Don’t even remember why, it just didn’t feel right to me.

Giving the John Petrucci trinity picks a run right now to see if I want to replace my trusty
