Jazz in the bridge of a Strat?

All righty. Here we go. Sorry to bother you all again, but I have a question.

Listening to the sound clips online of all the Duncan pickups, me and my friend picked a few that we liked for the pickups to put in my Partocaster, a Warmoth maple neck with a homebuilt ash or alder body (whichever's cheaper) and a hardtail bridge.

Right now, we're thinking an H/S setup, with no middle pickup. That's the combo that I love in my Jackson Soloist, and I think it'll work in my homejobbie, here.

The pickup that we decided on for the neck is the Duckbucker. That thing just sounded awesome clean! It's distortion was a little less great, but I'm confident I could dial in something nice on my amp. (Traynor YCV40)

The bridge pickups, though, are where we were confused. The 2 sounds that I liked the most were the Jazz and JB, each distorted in the bridge. On the humbucker CD, were they recorded with a Strat, or a Les Paul? I didn't like the JB Jr. that I heard on the 'Strat' page, but the full-size JB on the humbucker page was kind of nice...

Would either of those humbuckers work in the bridge of a Strat? And, failing that, what would give me the tight, clear sound that I'm looking for?

I had a chance to ask Seymour about his choice for a bridge humbucker in a Strat with vintage output single coils a few years ago. Guess what? Seymour suggested the Jazz! In fact, he suggested the Jazz neck model used as a bridge pickup. I never got around to trying it. I went for a 59 Trembucker and was very satisfied with that. I tried a JB and it overpowered the single coils. I'd take a solo on the JB and then switch to the neck single coil to play rythym and it just wasn't loud enough. Lew

Traditional might have to work...I don't see the Jazz listed in Trembucker size in Duncan's price list. The 59B is though....that's a great bridge pickup in a Strat and what I use in both of my HB Strats. Lew

hey, Lew did you ever try a Custom Custom in the bridge of a Strat? I know it sounds great with a LP through a Marshall, never heard one in a Strat though.

I have not tried the CC in any of Strats. I do use the CC in my favorite humbucker guitar, my Hamer Monoco Super Pro and love the heck out of it. The CC is very smooth and reminds me of maple syrup! :laugh2: Never tried it in my Strats because #1: I worry that, like the JB, it will overpower the vintage output Antiquity Surfer single coils I use and #2: I was a little concerned that the smooth buttery tone of the CC would contrast to much with the glassy bright Surfer single coils and perhaps make it difficult to dial in one volume and tone setting on my amp that sounds great with both style of pickups.

I guess #3 would be that I'm totally happy with the 59 Trembuckers I use.

fair enough and I understand. I've read on this board more than a few times that the CC is kind of a hotter version of the EVH.

I just put a CC in the bridge of my Strat and am happy with it so far. My singles are Tex Mex (for now... soon to be replaced with APS-1s). I picked the CC to try because its ouput when split is comparable to the Tex Mex's, and hopefully will be with the APSs as well. Anyhow... for my taste, it sounds great. The CC brings out some really sweet harmonics in my guitar that were not there with the original Tex Mex HB. It is, however, hotter by itself than the singles, so I have to make some adjustment between those switch positions. I also run the singles in series to emulate a neck HB, and the balance between that setting and the CC is great. So for me it is a compromise. The only accommodation I have to make is when switching from th SC's to the HB in standard mode.

Lets face it Lew, you just need to go out a buy another Strat
